Profession Diplomat

Stanley Tuemler Escudero (b. 1942) in Daytona Beach, Florida. He has served as U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan, 1992-95, U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan, 1995-1997, and as U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, 1997-2000.

Escudero is a retired American diplomat and previous United States Ambassador to Tajikistan. Escudero is also known as 'Escuderostan' for his close association with the sordid underbelly of the former USSR. He is originally from Florida, and served in the U.S. foreign service in multiple capacities.

Escudero first came to prominence for his outspoken views on Iran in the 1970s. While serving in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in the mid '70s, he questioned the Shah's longevity in power. This challenge to the basic tenets of U.S. policy in the region would probably have ended his career, had the shah not proved him right soon thereafter. As the Iranian revolution was unfoldng, Escudero was sent back to Iran with the mission of getting out in the street and finding out what was happening -- since he is half Mexican and speaks fluent Persian, with a beard and a hat he did not stand out in a crowd of Iranians.

[edit] Education

Escudero received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida in 1965.
