[edit] Academic success

The school's examination performance has led to it receiving a School Achievement Award for three years in succession. In 2006, 73% of Year 11 students achieved the benchmark standard of five good GCSE results, up from 68% in 2005.[citation needed]

This performance places the school in the top 20% of English schools for value added between ages 11 and 16, and the top 10% between ages 14 and 16. Source: DfES.

In June 2006 Stanley was graded outstanding for its performance in Art and Design. The last full inspection was in 2007 when the school was judged to be satisfactory overall.[citation needed]

[edit] Student protest

On 20 May 2005, about 500 to 600 pupils walked out of lessons to protest about form changes. This means that pupils of different years (7,8,9,10 and 11) would all be in the same registration form. These changes were planned to come in to force immediately, but because of the protest being on such a massive scale, the headteacher decided to delay these changes by one year. His plan was that pupils would be allowed to choose who they would like to be in their form out of their year in mixed form groups. In September 2006, the changes were made, the students settled in and since then the system has been working well. The pupils are now divided into 4 houses, each with their own colour; Grey-Thompson (Red), Coe (Yellow), Redgrave (Blue) and Holmes (Green). The houses are named after athletes and famous sports people. [1]

[edit] Headteacher suspension

On 7 September 2007, the headteacher of the school, David Tansey, was suspended along with his secretary.[2] After an investigation taken out by Sefton Council, they found that he had done nothing wrong so he returned to the school the next week. No further action was taken.
