From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stanko Karaman (1889-1959) was a researcher on amphipods and isopods. Several species are named after him, for example Delamarella karamani Petkovski, 1957 (Harpacticoida, Latiremidae), Stygophalangium karamani Oudemans, 1933 (Arachnida, incertae sedis), or Macedonethes stankoi Karaman, 2003 (Isopoda, Trichoniscidae).

In 1926 he founded the Macedonian Museum of Natural History in Skopje.

There are several other researchers with the same name, that have also species named after them, for example:

  • his son, Gordan S. Karaman, had also several taxa named after him, including Coloboceras karamani Bartsch, 1973 (Acarina, Halacaridae), Autonoe karamani Myers, 1976 (Amphipoda, Corophiida, Aoridae), Rhipidogammarus karamani Stock, 1971 (Gammaridae), and Gordania Berge & Vader, 2001 (Amphipoda, Stegocephalidae).

His second wife, Bozana Karaman, also worked as a zoologist, as do some other persons of the same family.
