Stand Up! (song)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stand Up! is a chant sung by football supporters. It uses the tune of the Village People and Pet Shop Boys song Go West.
An orchestral version adopted by FIFA as the official theme song of the 2006 FIFA World Cup performed by the Italian baritone Patrizio Buanne. The song is played to the end of all the matches.
Interestingly enough the same tune and the same name has been used throughout British football for years.
The lyrics are simple: "Stand up if you hate Man U " or " Stand up if you love (your team)" repeated over and over. The effect the chanter intends to have is to have all fellow supporters standing in unison with them.
There are also variations such as "Stand up - if you're going up" and "Stand up - if you're staying up", referring to the Promotion and relegation in English football, often by teams who are o be promoted to taunt opposition fans whose team has been condemned to relegation.
