Stamford Brook

Stamford Brook is the confluence of three smaller streams, arising in West London, flowing into Hammersmith Creek and thence into the River Thames. The name is a corruption of the 'stoney ford' (stanford) by which it was crossed. By 1900, this brook had been covered over and is now a sewer.

Stamford Brook has given its name to the local London Underground station, Stamford Brook tube station.

The Chelsea Football Club ground Stamford Bridge is also situated in West London, but is not, as the name suggests, at the site of a crossing point. Chelsea football ground is built near the site of the 'stone bridge' (stanbridge), which carried the kings road over Counter's Creek. These have been confused in popular memory.
