[edit] Fictional character biography

During World War II, Ivan Illyich Gort was given superhuman powers by Soviet scientists. He became a symbol of Russia's resistance of Nazi Germany. He was given the codename Stalnoivolk (steel wolf). Due to Joseph Stalin's belief that the fanatically loyal Gort, and others like him might pose a threat after the war, he had the formula for creating super-beings destroyed.

Due to his participation in the purging of the Ukraine, Stalnoivolk was exiled to Siberia when Stalin died. He was brought back in the 1990's by Major Zastrow, leader of the Red Shadows.

He murdered Ron Raymond's (Firestorm) grandfather Richard Dane, a former WW II hero known as Captain X, when Dane tries to protect his grandson from Gort.

The Suicide Squad confronts Gort more than once, including a battle where the Bronze Tiger defeats him. Soon they force Gort into helping in a mission to destroy a dangerous cache of weapons. Squad operative Deadshot was supplied with a laser pistol capable of piercing Gort's skin. He goes along with the mission and the weapons are ultimately destroyed.

Due to his involvement with the Squad, however involuntary, the Russian government cuts him loose. Stalnoivolk opposes the Russian soldiers involved in this order and is intent on returning to Moscow.
