Stalag Luft I
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stalag Luft I was a German Army World War II prisoner-of-war camp built near Barth, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, for captured Allied airmen. The presence of the prison camp is said to have shielded the town of Barth from Allied bombing.[1] Approximately 9,000 Allied Airmen ( 7,588 American and 1,351 Royal Air Force ) were imprisoned by the Germans at Stalag Luft I.[2]
