The civil parish was formerly named Hardhorn-with-Newton, and also contains Newton, a hamlet to the north of Staining. Another hamlet, Hardhorn, was formerly part of the parish but is now part of the town of Poulton-le-Fylde. The village is notable for its windmill, one of the few remaining in the Fylde.
