Stac Biorach
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stac Biorach (Scottish Gaelic: "the pointed stack") is a sea stack, 73 m tall. between Hirta and Soay in the St Kilda archipelago of Scotland. It is next to Soay Stac.
[edit] History
The St Kildans used to collect sea bird eggs from here. Rev Neil MacKenzie, observed the islanders collecting eggs from here in baskets like flat-bottomed bee hives, each basket holding about 400 eggs.
The first recorded instance of what may have been recreational stack climbing occurred in 1883 when Charles Barrington ascended Stac Biorach. It was described in the Alpine Club Journal and was very different from most mountaineering feats at that time. Barrington also made the first ascent of the Eiger.
