Risk: Star Wars Original Trilogy Edition is a commercial strategic board game, produced by Parker Brothers, a division of Hasbro. It is a variation of the classic board game Risk, with the rules and appearance altered to fit within the fictional Star Wars universe, during the Galactic Civil War (Episodes 4, 5, and 6) period. It was released in November of 2006, almost two years after the release of Star Wars Risk: The Clone Wars Edition

[edit] Overview

Unlike the generic armies differentiated only by their color in the classic game of Risk, in the Star Wars Original Trilogy Edition there are three distinct factions: the Empire, the Rebel Alliance and the Hutts.

While any number of players between two and five are able to play, the game is optimized for three- or five-player games, in which the Hutt faction is player-controlled. In two- or four-person play, the Hutt pieces can still be placed on the board to act as an inactive neutral force to deepen gameplay.

The Empire and Rebel Alliance factions each have two sets of differently colored figurines (orange and yellow for the Rebels, and two shades of gray for the Imperials), meaning up to two players can team up and control their own separate armies within each of those factions, facilitating the four- and five-person gameplay. There is only one set of green figurines for the Hutt faction.

The game board uses a similar system of "territories" and "continents" to the original game of Risk, but in this edition they are replaced by "planets" and "regions," respectively. Many notable planets and moons from the Star Wars saga and Expanded Universe are represented, such as Coruscant, Tatooine, and Nar Shaddaa. The grouping of the planets into regions roughly equates the commonly accepted maps of the Star Wars galaxy, with a few exceptions, such as Ord Mantell's placement in the Outer Rim region instead of the Mid Rim.

The game can be played with standard Risk rules or Star Wars Original Trilogy Edition rules.

[edit] Object

When playing by the Star Wars Original Trilogy Edition rules, each of the three factions has its own victory condition.

The Empire must eliminate all Rebel forces.

The Rebel Alliance must find and destroy the Emperor, who will be hidden under one of the Imperial Bases.

The Hutts must take control of 10 out of the 13 designated resource planets on the board.

The moment one of these victory conditions has been met by the respective faction, the game is over and that faction has won.

[edit] Special Components

[edit] Faction-specific figurines

Unlike the generic infantryman, cavalryman, and artillery piece figurines (representing one, five, and ten units, respectively) of the classic Risk, this edition includes figurines based on faction-specific characters. Each faction has two figurines, one representing a single unit, the other representing three. Also, as previously stated, the Rebel pieces are split between orange and yellow figurines, the Imperial pieces between two shades of gray figurines, and all the Hutt figurines are green.

The Imperial single-unit figurine is a Stormtrooper, and the three-unit figurine is an AT-ST.

The Rebel single-unit figurine is a Rebel trooper, and the three-unit figurine is an Incom T-47.

The Hutt single-unit figurine is a Gamorrean thug, and the three-unit figurine is a Rancor.

[edit] Faction-specific decks

There are three separate decks of Risk cards, in this edition known as Faction Cards, with one for each faction in the game. The cards for the Empire are gray, those for the Rebel Alliance are red, and those for the Hutts are green. These cards are used to gain bonus troops, build ships, and to initiate special directives.

[edit] Force Meter

There is a track on the game board labeled "Force Meter." This is used throughout the game to keep track of whether the Force is strong with the dark side or the light side. The side the Force Meter favors will determine whether the Imperial or Rebel (or neither) faction receives bonuses. The Force Meter does not affect the Hutts.

[edit] Resource Planet Counter

There is another track on the game board labeled "Resource Planets." This is used throughout the game to keep track of how many resource planets the Hutts control, and thus how close that faction is to meeting its victory condition. This track does not affect the Rebellion or the Empire and is not used in the 2-player or 4-player games.

[edit] Death Stars

Two Death Star figurines are included in the game. One is used by the Imperial player(s) to destroy planets as permitted by cards drawn from the Imperial deck. The other is used to keep track of the favored side of the Force on the Force Meter.

[edit] Ships

Each faction has cardboard tokens representing three different classes of ships: Fighter, Bomber, and Capital. The ships used to represent these classes are different for each faction.

Imperial ships: Fighter class - TIE Fighter; Bomber class - TIE Bomber; Capital class - Star Destroyer

Rebel ships: Fighter class - X-Wing; Bomber class - Y-Wing; Capital class - Rebel Cruiser

Hutts ships: Fighter class - IG-2000; Bomber class - Slave I; Capital class - Jabba's Cruiser

Ships cannot be used to conquer planets, and instead take on a support role by acting as roll modifiers. Unlike ground troops, ship classes are not interchangeable, that is, a fighter does not represent any number of bombers or capital ships, etc.

[edit] 8-Sided Dice

Some cards and some ships will allow you to use the 8-sided dice, instead of the standard 6-sided.

[edit] Imperial Base Tokens

These tokens represent Imperial Bases controlled by the Empire. At the start of each Imperial turn, one Imperial base token must be placed facedown on the gameboard. These tokens add bonuses to the defense of the planets they are on, and one will hide the Emperor.

[edit] Asteroid Field Tokens

These tokens will be placed on the gameboard when the Death Star blows up a planet. The planet's space is covered up and the asteroid field that replaces it cannot be attacked or fortified through.
