Wookiees were supposed to be in The Return of the Jedi but George Lucas ultimately wanted a race less advanced and created Ewoks, which is just Wookiee which the syllables reversed.

Did you know that the original Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi was originally called Revenge of the Jedi. --User:Star Wars' Wiki
