St Thomas's Minster

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St Thomas's Church (to 2008), now known as St Thomas's Minster is the main Anglican church in Newport on the Isle of Wight. It is unusual in being dedicated to both Thomas the Apostle and St Thomas Becket.

Princess Elizabeth of England, daughter of Charles I and Henrietta Maria, is buried in the church. It was granted Minster status by its diocesan bishop Kenneth Stevenson, Bishop of Portsmouth, in 2008 in recognition of its status as the central church not only of Newport but also the Isle of Wight as a whole.
