St Mawgan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St Mawgan in Pydar is a small village and a Civil Parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.

The nearby airforce base, RAF St. Mawgan takes its name from the village. Also at that site (and sharing a runway) is Newquay Cornwall International Airport.

The valley in which St. Mawgan lies is known locally as The Vale of Lanherne. It was the subject of a poem by poet Henry Sewell Stokes.

There are two local cricket teams which play Sunday friendlies, the Vale of Lanherne C.C. and St Mawgan C.C.

The Vale of Lanherne C.C. is a highly successful feeder team for the local area which is responsible for the identification and grooming of world class players such as Pete Middlehurst and Gavin Pipe.

It has one small primary school: St Mawgan-In-Pydar primary school.

St Mawgan also has a 13th century parish church, and the River Menalhyl runs through the village. There are 2 pubs, The Falcon Inn and The Airways. Also at St Mawgan is a bonsai tree nursery and a Japanese Garden attraction, plus a small craft shop.
