Saint John Payne Catholic Comprehensive School is a Catholic comprehensive school located in Chelmsford, Essex, in the East of England. It was established in 1959. It is a mixed school and caters for over 1100 pupils of all abilities aged 11-18. The school was awarded Technology College status in September 2003.

Through the three-way partnership of home, school and church and recognising that Jesus Christ is to be found in each one of us, it is our understood and shared aim to foster a community where life is lived according to Gospel values and the teachings of the Catholic Church and whereby each member of that community is afforded every opportunity to realise his or her full potential which is to be a true imitator of Jesus Christ who himself said: "Love one another as I have loved you"

St John Payne Comprehensive School was opened initially in 1959 as, the Blessed John Payne RC Comprehensive School, housed in what are now known as the Lower School buildings. Later the school was expanded with the addition of the middle school building. In 1977 the former Chelmsford Technical High School building was acquired by the Diocese of Brentwood and this is now known as the Upper School building.

There are three main areas in St John Payne Catholic Comprehensive School. There is the Lower, Middle and Upper school areas. In Lower school, there is a Hall used for cover lessons and assemblies. There are also the girls changing rooms and a gym. Located in Lower school are the Business Studies, Economics, Art and History, as well as some IT rooms. In between Lower and Middle School there is a picnic area. There is also the Multigym with various equipment. In Middle School there is a library, as well as RE, Geography and Science rooms. There are also two Access Centres (IT), a medical room and a hall used for assemblies and exams. Upper School is the largest of all three buildings; it has a large hall for Mass and assemblies and other gatherings. There are a variety of subject classes in Upper School, including Science, English and the Technology Dept, ICT department and MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) department. There is also the Main Office and Cafeterias. It became St John Payne after the Pope made the 40 maryters saints.
The school has a chapel and chaplincy. It is surrounded by spacious grounds and playing fields occupying 25 acres (10.1 hectares).
[edit] Teaching staff
The school has been fortunate to employ many excellent staff since its formation. Foremost of these in the opinion of a large number of students is Mr A. Ward, the senior Geography teacher. His excellence has been recognised by national awards, and is a cherished member of the school community. The current Head Teacher is Mr F. McEvoy, who came to the post in 2000 after a number of years as Deputy Head Teacher, Mr McEvoy's predecessor was Mr J.A. McDonald.
