Universidad Mayor Real y Pontificia de San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca. is a public university in Sucre Bolivia. Its one of the oldest universities of the new world, older than Harvard which oldest official reference as a university occurs only in 1780, and its also the oldest one in South America. Founded in 1624 by order of the Spanish King Philip IV and the support of Pope Innocent XII the university was aimed to provide an education on Law and Theology to the families of the rich noblemen established in South America and its descent.

Chuquisaca and its university became at the beginnings of the XIX century the main focus of independency ideals among its cultivated and Francophile elite which led to the independence war and ultimately to the independence of all the Spanish colonies. Once the republic proclaimed by Simon Bolivar the university became the main university of the new country. Until the first decades of the XX century its law faculty remained famous all across South America.
