[edit] Refurbishment and facilities
In recent years the College has undergone some major refurbishments and improvements to its facilities. Many areas of the school were completely redone, some of these areas include the Resource Center an area which all students have access to, the Resource Center contains books of varying subject and genre as well as an abundance of computers for online and computer related research. Another area of the College which has received a make-over is the maths building, this building was recently constructed it is 2 story and consists of 8 classrooms, it is commonly known as the 'D' Block. The Industrial Art as well as the Food and Fabric areas have been recently redone including completely rebuilt and refitted kitchens in the food preparation area. In recent years the school also built another building (The Middle School building, aka 'M' block) this is a 2 story mainly glass building containing 8 classrooms and 2 breakout areas with around 20 computers.[citation needed]
The School also boasts a fully functional theater area, containing up-to-date lighting and prop equipment as well as a large seating area for performances such as the school musical held every second year. The School's basketball and tennis courts were also recovered and repainted with some new design changes making basketball and tennis a realistic choice for school physical education classes. Additionally, the school has created many "breakout" computing areas in the renovated areas of the school. This, combined with the three dedicated computer labs has increased the number of computers available to students to well over 40 units.
[edit] WasteWise
SFXC has moved closer to becoming an environmentally sustainable school through cardboard paper, recycling bins, of which there is at least one in every class room, the Blue and Red recycling bins - placed strategically around the school, routine decontamination, an Earthmaker organic compost system, integrated Waste Wise and Sustainability education for new and current students and a new Worm farm so that food scraps from its food department: such as fruit and vegetable peels, egg shells, garden waste and other organic materials can be recycled.
The fundamental principles of WasteWise are: Avoid, Rethink, Re-use, Recycle. St Francis Xavier College has tried to heavily incorporate this into the College and find ways that students can implement WasteWise solutions at home and look at ways of reducing unnecessary landfill-bound material. [1]
Recently Saint Francis received a A.C.T NoWaste award, which is an award given by the ACT government to organizations with commendable environmentally sustainable no-waste programs.
St Francis Xavier College also recently became the First High School/College in Canberra to be Officially Wastewise Accreted.
