St Brides Wentloog
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
St. Brides or St. Brides Wentloog (Welsh: Llansanffraid Gwynllŵg) is a small hamlet to the south west of the city of Newport in south Wales.
[edit] Location
It lies in the community (parish) of Wentloog and electoral district (ward) of Marshfield. Like most of the settlements on the Wentloog Level it lies on land behind the sea wall [1] reclaimed from the Bristol Channel [2] and criss-crossed by large and small drainage ditches, known locally as reens [3].
[edit] History
The village and parish church [4] of St. Bride's, Wentloog is dedicated to St. Bridget and is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an unusually fine Perpendicular embattled western tower [5] containing 6 bells, four of which are dated 1734 and bear inscriptions.
The West Usk Lighthouse [6] is built on the shore of the Bristol Channel south of this parish.
It was the birthplace of Lyn Harding (1867 – 1952), the Welsh actor of stage, silent and talkie films, and radio.
