St. Xavier's School in Doranda, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India was founded in 1960 and till around 2002 enjoyed an unchallenged position as Jharkhand`s (and before that Bihar`s) best school in every aspect[citation needed]. It is named after Saint Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order).
The school is run by the Society of Jesus and provides education for about 1,000 students from kindergarten to standard 12. Plus two (+2) was started around the year 2000 and was until recently running under the guidance of the late Hira Prasad.
Until about 1976 the school used to follow the Cambridge Higher Secondary curriculum and now follows the Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE) curriculum. Many students from the school leave to join St. Xavier's College, Ranchi or other schools offering education beyond standard 10. The school has also had a distinguished history of feeding students into the leading engineering colleges (IITs and BIT, NIT's ,KIIT etc.) and medical colleges of India[citation needed].
Many students come from local business families and have stayed on to become part of their businesses. Until about 1990 the only competition the school faced for boys' education was from the DAV School nearby[citation needed]. Since then several other schools (e.g. Delhi Public School) have opened and provide further options for boys' education.
