[edit] History
Saint Thomas More Collegiate opened its doors in September 1960, with 110 students enrolled in grades 7, 8 and 9. Over the years enrollment and staff grew as did the facilities. Major construction was carried out in 1966, 1978, 1981, 1984, and with the introduction of co-education in 1998. Today's enrollment stands at about 650 students - both girls and boys - and the school now houses a gymnasium with changing rooms and weight room, a cafeteria, a large library, art, drama, and music rooms, a science wing, a computer lab, woodwork shop, and technical education room, as well as improved washrooms, offices and counselling center.
In the 1990s, criminal proceedings began against members of the Christian Brothers in Newfoundland, several of whom were teaching at STMC (Edward French, Joseph Burke, Edward English, and Kevin Short.[1] The proceedings were based on allegations of sexual and physical abuse against boys at the Mount Cashel Orphanage. It was alleged that the Brothers were allowed to escape prosecution at the time (1980s) if they left Newfoundland.[2] The subsequent lawsuits by victims of the Christian Brothers organization threatened to close the school in 2004.[citation needed] The story received considerable press coverage and was covered as widely as in Pakistan.[3]
[edit] Programs
The Saint Thomas More Collegiate curriculum is based on the “Knight’s Compass”, a cross with a different field of education at each of the four ends, with Faith in the center. The outer fields are: Academics, Athletics, Arts, and Science/Technology.
The STMC athletics program offers basketball, football, volleyball, wrestling, and other sports. The sports teams are known as "Knights."
The school is also recognized for its academic program and its fine and performing arts programs which include instrumental and choral music, drama, visual arts, and media arts.
