St. Stephen's High School, a conservative Episcopalian school run by Chinese Christians, is situated in the Binondo district of Manila. It is one of the major Chinese Filipino schools in Manila. The school offers courses of study from Pre-Nursery to High School 4 and has more than 1,500 students in all departments.
It was founded in 1917 by the American Rev. Fr. Hobart Studley and his wife, Edith. The first class of the school was held in the living room of the reverend with 22 girls. It was first established as an all-girls school, but after World War II, the school began accepting boys as students.
It has varsity teams in basketball, swimming, volleyball, athletics, and table tennis. The volleyball team won the Men's National Collegiate Athletic Association (MNCAA) Championship in 2006. The athletics and swimming teams have also garnered numerous awards in both regional and national competitions in past years. The school has a strong program in Mathematics, Science, Computers, English, Music, and Arts, and its students have won both national and international competitions in these fields. The school hosted the 37th Season of the Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) with the theme "Victory beyond Competition."
The school is a premier venue for interschool activities and competitions. The Stephenian Math Society hosts the Lord of the Math Interschool Competition annually at the Stephenian Hall. The school has served as host school for training sessions held by the Mathematics Trainers' Guild, or MTG, for several years already. St. Stephen's also hosted the successful 1st Filipino-Chinese Youth Leaders' Convention in February 2005 at Canyon Woods Residential Resort, Batangas.
The school celebrated its historic 90th founding anniversary on July 22, 2007 with the theme "God's Glory with Exceeding Joy!" In celebration, the school held the 1st Interschool Extemporaneous Speech Competition, the 1st Earth Science Quiz, and three concerts: namely, a concert in cooperation with the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines entitled "An Evening of Praise," featuring the Heavenly Melody Singers from Taiwan; a Thanksgiving concert entitled "Images of Christ" in November 2007, directed by Ms. Celia Ong and Mr. Chinggoy Alonso; and the Thanksgiving marimba concert, featuring Mr. Johnny Yu (marimbist), Prof. Raul Sunico (Dean of the UST Conservatory of Music), Mr. Conrado Ong (member of the Kasarinlan Music Ensemble), and Ms. Patricia Lim (Music Coordinator of SSHS and conductor of the Stephenian Chorale, SSP Church and Chancel Choirs).
