St. Mary's First Nation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Mary's First Nation is one of six Maliseet Nations on the Saint John River in Canada.

Roughly half the members of the St. Mary's First Nation reside on the St. Mary's reserve, which is a very modest 125 hectares or 310 acres.

St. Mary's is located within the city of Fredericton, the provincial capital of New Brunswick between the residential communities of Devon and Nashwaaksis on the North Side of the Saint John River.

The First Nation is also connected to the Devon reserve, a tiny parcel of land of 1 hectare (2.5 acres) on the Saint John River in Devon, which was the original site of the Indian reserve in the 19th century, but is currently undeveloped.

St. Mary's is governed by a Chief and Council.

According to the Government of Canada, as of June 2006, the Nation has a registered membership of 1325, with 676 living on the St. Mary's reserve.
