St. Martin's Le Grand
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
St Martin’s le Grand is a street in the City of London between Newgate Street and Cheapside to the south and Aldersgate Street and London Wall to the north.
In 750 the Saxon collegiate church of St. Martin was built. It was rebuilt in 1056, and its precincts were granted the privilege of sanctuary. The church was responsible for the sounding of the curfew bell in the evenings, which announced the closing of the City's gates. It was dissolved by Henry VIII and was demolished in 1548. [1]
The General Post Office was established there in 1829. The nearest London Underground station is St Paul’s, which is a short distance to the south.
