St. Margaret's School (SMS) in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, is an international, non-denominational private school for girls, with grades ranging from Junior Kindergarten (Early Childhood Education, ECE) to Grade 12. The school is open to both day and boarding students. St. Margaret's was founded in 1908 by English sisters Edith and Isobel Fenwick on the corner of Cook and Burdett Streets. Today, it is located on 22 acres of park-like setting and is the oldest, continous independent school on Vancouver Island, on Canada's scenic west coast.

Holding the highest standards for learning, leadership and social responsibility, St. Margaret’s combines strong visual and performing arts, a full sports programme and an academic curriculum that challenges and inspires young women. St. Margaret’s offers Advanced Placement courses and an extensive extra-curricular programme combining athletics, arts and community service.

St. Margaret’s School students excel in academics, technology, fine arts and athletic programs. Most recently St. Margaret’s finished first and second in the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair, had eleven students participate in the intensive Gulf Islands Film and Television (G.I.F.T.s) program, a graduating student was accepted into two prestigious art schools, Pratt Institute and Parsons Design in New York, and our senior novice rowing team won silver at the city championships.

[edit] Class Size

St. Margaret’s class sizes range in size from ten to twenty students per class.

[edit] Campus

The two main components of the St. Margaret's campus are the Junior School (Grades JK to 6) and the two wings of the Senior School (Grades 7 to 12). Also on campus is Alexis Dining Hall, the North & South Gyms, the Fine Arts building, the Barratt Library and Language Lab and the four boarding houses: Pearce, Fenwick, French and Barton, named after influential heads of school. There is also a two tennis court and a soccer field.

[edit] Boarding

St. Margaret’s provides an enriched boarding experience to approximately 100 students from countries all around the world. In addition to the extra-curricular program open to all students, boarding girls are offered and encouraged to participate in the specialized boarding after-school and weekend activities. These range from the boarding Student Council, movie night, fitness activities such as belly-fit, yoga and kickboxing, swimming, ice skating, hiking and cycling trips, boarding house competitions, and weekend trips away to nearby Vancouver and Seattle. Trips this year also included surfing in Tofino, camping in Parksville and skiing in Whistler.

Each student shares a room with a student from another culture. Each room hosts two students with their own bathroom and shower. Each house has it’s own kitchen, common room and ‘house-mom’ who is in the house 24/7. ‘House-moms’ provide the girls with a stability and comfort to those away from home for the first time and our dedicated full-time counselor, nurse and activities coordinator.

[edit] English as a Second Language

The school year begins in mid-August with an intensive orientation program and ends in June with short breaks in late December and March. Upon arriving at St. Margaret’s for the August orientation, the student’s English language skills are assessed and then a program of studies is designed to meet her academic goals, interests and experience. International students are integrated into regular classes and supported by welcoming, professional staff through our English as a Second Language (ESL) program.

International students are accepted into St. Margaret’s regular classroom or English as a Second Language (ESL) program from age 13 to age 18. International students who complete all requirements receive a secondary school graduation diploma known as the British Columbia Dogwood Diploma – the same diploma that is awarded to local secondary students.

[edit] Extra-Curricular Activities

Students are encouraged to participate in the diverse range of courses and extra-curricular activities available to them to provide them with a well-rounded educational experience. In addition to the selection of activities available to all students, the boarding students have a dedicated activities coordinator who, through student input, carries out activities after school and weekends.

[edit] Uniform

Grades JK to 3 wear the jumper, and Grades 4 to 12 wear the kilt, both in the Malcolm tartan. Grades 1 & up wear the red blazer with SMS crest. The Summer Uniform, from post-Spring Break to Thanksgiving, replaces the jumper/kilt with navy culottes or skirt respectively.
