The St. Louis Police Department was established in 1808, only five years after St. Louis became part of the United States as a result of the Louisiana Purchase, and thirteen years before Missouri was admitted as a state[3]. The department was created with only four officers, who received no pay[4]. In 1861, the department was reorganized under state control as the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department[5].

From April 28, 1836, to February 21, 2007, the Officer Down Memorial Page reported that there were 163 line of duty deaths in the St. Louis Police Department[6]. The Officer Down Memorial Page also reported that 90 of these were from gunfire, and only 3 of those were accidental[7]. It was also reported by the ODMP that an additional 38 deaths were caused by automobile-related incidents, and 3 by heart attacks[8].
