The St. Leger Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in the United Kingdom for three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards (2,937 m) at Doncaster Racecourse in September. First held in 1776, it has eclipsed the earlier established Doncaster Cup as the most important race run at the course.

It is the oldest of the five British Classic Races and also the final leg of both the colts' and fillies' Triple Crowns. Unlike the earlier Classics, the St. Leger in recent years has not always been contested by the most highly regarded three-year-olds in training. These have instead tended to be aimed towards the more glamorous and rewarding all-aged Group 1 races over shorter distances, such as the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. However, the St. Leger can often be won by a good late-maturing three-year-old with the potential to improve in the following seasons.

[edit] History

A sweepstake of 25 Guineas was held over two miles (3 km) on Cantley Common, two miles (3 km) east of the current racecourse, on 24 September 1776. The rules stipulated that colts should carry eight stone (50.8 kg) of weight, and fillies seven stone twelve pounds (49.9 kg).

The event was organised by Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (a prominent politician and former Prime Minister) and was the idea of Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St. Leger (a former MP). On the day, the winning horse (from a field of five) was owned by Rockingham, with a horse owned by St. Leger following in second.

The event didn't receive its name until a meeting held between the 1777 and 1778 meets. When it was suggested that the race should be called the Rockingham Stakes, the Marquess is said to have replied, "No it was my friend St. Leger who suggested the thing to me - call it after him".

Local legend suggests that Anthony St. Leger may have staged a fore-runner of the 1776 race at his private racecourse in Firbeck, eight miles (13 km) south of Doncaster. In 1779, the race moved from Cantley to a new course on the Town Moor, where it remains to this day.

The race was run as the September Stakes at Newmarket from 1915 to 1918, and during the World War II it was run at Thirsk in 1940, Manchester in 1941, on the July Course at Newmarket from 1942 to 1944 and at York in 1945. The 1939 running was cancelled due to the outbreak of war. The 1989 race was transferred to Ayr after the scheduled running at Doncaster was abandoned due to subsidence. The 2006 race took place at York while Doncaster was closed for redevelopment.
