[edit] History
In 1918, the College was situated on Albert Street, East Melbourne, and served as a boys matriculation college. In 1932, the school was moved to the corner of St. Georges and Orrong Roads, Toorak. Property in Heyington was purchased and developed into playing fields. The Heyington Property is now the Senior School Campus, housing Years 7 to 8, and Years 10 through to year 12, in a vertical house system.
The present Senior School was built in 1960, notably the Kearney Building, which is visible on the approach from the Glen Waverley railway line. The Lansell Road property was opened in 1972, and that same year the Orrong road property was sold. In 1982, the K.C. Smith building was constructed for the middle school years on the Senior Campus, and in 1990 the Pavilion was opened. Since its opening, the Pavilion has flooded twice, both in 2005. Ovals one and two were completely submerged, resembling flooded school foyers in the 1970s.
The Cummins Building was refurbished in 1997, and currently houses the creative arts precinct, which includes arts, drama, music and artistic works. The McCarthy Building was opened in 1997, housing Art Studios, the Campus Library and the Administration Block. The Lansell Road property is now home to the Glendalough Campus, and in 1999 became a full primary school, housing prep to grade 6 students. Also in 1999, Year 9 students moved from the Senior Campus to a dedicated campus named Waterford in Balaclava. Waterford currently resides in the former Vaucluse College FCJ site in Richmond.
In March 2006, a $16 million indoor pool, gym and sports facility, the Wilding Centre, was blessed by Cardinal George Pell and opened for the students.
[edit] Houses
As with most Australian schools, St Kevin's utilises a house system. The houses are named after Brothers who taught at the College:
- Kenny (Red)
- Kearney (Blue)
- Cusack (Green)
- Purton (Yellow)
- McCarthy (Cambridge blue)
McCarthy was introduced to St. Kevins College in 2008. Like all the other houses, McCarthy was named after a former Headmaster and current teacher, Brother Francis McCarthy. The colour is in recognition of Br. McCarthy's doctorate from The University of Cambridge. McCarthy House will only exist in the senior school (Years 7 to 12) initially, until a sixth house is introduced, when the whole school (Preparatory to Year 12) will have six houses.
[edit] Academics
[edit] VCE results
Since the early 2000s, St Kevin's has been regarded as one of best performing Private Schools in Victoria in regards to Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).[citation needed]
In 2007, St Kevin's once again proved to be the most successful school in the APS, with the highest percentage of study scores above 40, and the equal highest mean study score out of its APS competitors.[citation needed] These results also ensured that St. Kevin's was the fourth highest achieving non-selective boys high school in Victoria, the highest achieving Catholic boys school in Victoria and the second highest Catholic high school overall in Victoria; placed behind their sister school Loreto Mandeville Hall for the first time in a decade.[citation needed]
In 2006, approximately one third of the Year 12 cohort achieved a study score of over 40 out of a possible 50 study score points. Well over one-third of the 2006 cohort achieved ENTER scores exceeding 90.[citation needed] These results allowed St Kevin's to become the top-performing Catholic boys school in Victoria for the fourth year running, placing it once again ahead of traditional academic and sporting rival, Xavier College.[citation needed]
In 2005, over a third of the graduates scored above 40 out of a possible 50 study score points, some 20% higher than the state average.[citation needed] As a result, St. Kevin's was one of the top six highest performing schools in the VCE system.[citation needed] St Kevin's College was the best performing Catholic school, and was the best Independent Boys' School in Victoria.[citation needed] St Kevin's College was also top of the APS schools.[citation needed] 50% of the 2005 students scored an ENTER score of over 90. In 2005, eighteen students scored in the top 1% of the state: the highest number ever, having 15 in 2004 and 10 in 2003.[citation needed]
[edit] Co-curricular activities
St. Kevin's College students participate in a range of activities outside the curriculum. These include:
[edit] Christian living camp
In Year 11, a three day program is conducted with the St. Kevin's students and Year 11 girls from either Loreto Mandeville Hall or Korowa Anglican Girls' School. This program is designed to further enhance the students understandings about various aspects of life, as well as learning about things from the point of view of students of the opposite sex.
[edit] Drama
Extracurricular drama includes musicals with other schools, including Loreto Mandeville Hall, Korowa Anglican Girls' School, St Catherine's School, Toorak and Genazzano FCJ College. VCE Theatre Studies offers involvement in direction, dramaturgy, stage management, set design, costume, lighting, properties, make-up and sound.
[edit] Debating
St. Kevin's hosts and participates in the Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) League. In most St. Kevin's reaches the finals series, and most recently in 2003 were DAV Champions.[citation needed]
[edit] Kevinian
The Kevinian, first established in 1935[citation needed], was a regulated school newspaper relying on student submissions. The Kevinian was often largely comprised of editorial input, and notable features included Teacherisms, Opinion articles and satirical photo captions. The newspaper had been published sporadically in recent years and was discontinued entirely in 2007.
[edit] Music
All students from grades Prep to 6 are required to learn a string or wind instrument for at least one year. A full range of brass, woodwind, percussion and vocal musical genres are available.
The music department holds musical programmes that include performances, camps and tours. St. Kevin's is also the home to the St Patrick's Cathedral Choir. Alternative music concerts and performances include 'Lunchstock' - a gathering of school bands and performers during lunch breaks. The rigorous music programme also allows students the opportunity to perform at premier venues such as Hamer Hall, the Victorian Arts Centre, Robert Blackwood Hall and BMW Edge Federation Square, as well as music tours to Canberra.
In 2007, St. Kevin's participated in the first Interschool Idol hosted by Methodist Ladies' College (MLC) to raise money for various charities, featuring acts from some of Melbourne's other independent schools including MLC, Presbyterian Ladies' College, Scotch College, Carey Baptist Grammar School and St. Catherine's School. St. Kevin's won overall best school, with the College Music Captain being awarded the only "touchdown" by judges Mark Holden and Jo Stanley and another band winning their category.[citation needed]
The annual musical with Loreto Mandeville Hall, performed in one of the St. Kevin's theatres, and the bi-annual musical with Korowa Anglican Girls' School are performed to a high standard.
[edit] Outdoor education and student leadership
The OAP (Outdoors Activities Programme) originally replaced a Military Cadets Programme after World War II.[citation needed] The OAP is run on the College's private campsite at Silver Creek, set on 55 acres (22 ha) of the Mount Disappointment State Forest, 70 kilometres north of Melbourne. Years 3 to 11 are involved in the programmes, including a nine day trek and raft through the Victorian High Country. Activities that are offered include, rock climbing, surfing, canoeing, rafting, orienteering, bushwalking, cycle touring, cross country skiing and horse back riding.
Leadership roles are offered to Yr 12 Prefects and Officers. Following student and teacher votes, these students attend a leadership camp at Silver Creek. Each class in the junior levels is assigned a leader who visits on a weekly basis.
[edit] Sport
Summer sports include badminton, rowing, cricket, tennis, swimming, table tennis, diving, squash, lawn bowls and volleyball. Winter sports include Australian rules football, rugby union, soccer, basketball, field hockey, table tennis and cross country. Athletics and water polo are offered during the spring. All students participate in weekend sport competitions. Training for sport occurs after and before school hours, up to three times a week for various sports, such as rugby, and up to eight times a week for rowing.
The rugby, basketball and cricket teams have won numerous championships in the Associated Public Schools of Victoria Sporting league as well as on a National Level.[citation needed] The school has recently won premierships in Squash (2005,2007), Rugby (2005,2007), Cross Country (2006,2007) and Basketball (2007).[citation needed] The college also won the APS Athletics premiership in 2006 and 2007. In doing so, it ended Caulfield Grammar School's APS record of twelve consecutive premierships.[citation needed] The College's rowing 1st VIII recently came 4th at the 2008 Head of the River. This broke a 20 year A Final drought, with the last placing in A final being in 1988.
[edit] Community Service
As part of unholding the value of "fullness of life" of the College, a number of initiatives are conducted. This aspect of co-curricular life is founded on the notion of being a person for others, rather than indulging in a life of privilege. Such initiatives include compulsory community service of two hours a week as part of the academic program, as well as "street retreats", tutoring to the disadvantages, St. Vincent de Paul Society and "Star Camps" conduced in collaboration with fellow Catholic schools, Xavier College, Genazzano FCJ College and Loreto Mandeville Hall.
