The historic beginning of St. Joseph College dates back to April 15, 1945, not long after the deliberation of the Philippine Islands from the Japanese occupation. It was on this memorable day that the Very Reverend Mother General Rosario Rosales ordered Sr. Ma. Celina Magcauas to open a school in Cavite. With unflagging trust in God’s Divine guidance, she left immediately for Cavite accompanied by Sr. Caridad Salazar, her contemporary in the religious profession. After a brief conference with Fr. Pedro Llanera, the parish priest of Cavite, and after giving them his blessing, the two sisters started to look for a house where they could live and plant the seed of Catholic Education. Meantime, they stayed with the Magcauas family in Caridad which was about three blocks away from the San Roque Parish Church.

After three days of tedious searching, the sisters finally found a little house destined to be the “mustard seed” in Plaridel Street in Barrio San Jose, just a little behind the San Roque Parish Church, where providentially the Blessed Virgin of Solitude is venerated after the destruction of Porta Vaga, its original shrine. By the act of Divine Providence, the owner of the house was to move that day to a bigger house in Noveleta. This God’s chosen little house was offered to the sisters for a monthly rent of sixty pesos (R60.00), while the lot which belonged to another person, for seventy pesos, (R70.00) monthly. Without wasting time, the sisters, with the help of some kind neighbors, started to divide the house into classrooms by using “sawali” and coconut leaves for partitions.

At about this time, Sr. Margarita Ponce was sent by the Mother General to help the two sisters so that one sister could take care of the house while the other sisters went around for donations. With prudent management, they took turns in going around happily not only in Cavite but also in Bulacan, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, and Bataan.

With the help of God, the temporary permit for the elementary and secondary course were received in June 1945 in time for the formal opening of classes for the school year 1945 – 1946. It was very necessary that the sisters should sleep in the schoolhouse although there was no private bedroom for them. They were in this uncomfortable condition for two months until they were able to buy a piece of lot from the Samontes, their nearest neighbor, where they built a small cloister. The first A. R. community in Cavite was composed of:Sr. Ma. Celina Magcauas, A.R. (Superior/Principal); Sr. Caridad Salazar, A. R. (Directress); Sr. Esperanza Hefler, A. R. (Treasurer) and Sr. Margarita Ponce, A. R. (Companion).

From its humble beginnings dating back to 1945 as St. Joseph’s Institute, and was renamed St. Joseph College in 1947, the school has blossomed into one of the most respectable educational institutions not only in Cavite City but also in the entire province of Cavite.

The Augustinian Recollect Sisters take turns in managing the school. The school’s expansion in buildings and program offerings is in response to the needs and aspirations of the people in the community. An additional baccalaureate program was added at a time when hotels and restaurants were beginning to operate in the suburbs as a result of expatriates moving into the province due to the opening and development of an export processing zone in the nearby town of Rosario, Cavite.

The school administrators have initiated several innovations; one of which is the construction of a mock hotel that will house the HRM students for their practicum.

A building for the grade school department is also in the list of priorities after the construction of the simulation hotel. Apart from that, the school has already managed to have the school chapel renovated and all the classrooms air-conditioned. Additional laboratory materials have also been purchased for the various laboratories of High School and College; while the Skills Laboratory of the Institute of Health Sciences has been upgraded to keep up with the demands of the nursing program. The Learning Resource Center or the library is continuously acquiring newly published books to help students in their assignments and requirements. Computers with internet access have also been provided to all laboratories and offices.

[edit] St. Augustine Philosophy Of Education

Education is man’s journey of knowing God who is the Eternal Truth and of loving Him who is the Eternal Good. To achieve this goal, man journeys restlessly in faith according to the example and teachings of Jesus Christ and through reason which is his natural gift from the Creator.

In this concrete, Augustinian education aims to accompany young men and women who can integrate Faith and Reason in their personal lives in order to arrive at whatever is true and develop moral values to enable them to live in harmony with others.

Through the guidance and example of parents and teachers, the Augustinian pupils or students must become increasingly aware of their responsibilies to fellowmen and readily contribute to the building of just and human society where the Filipino people can journey together towards God.

It endeavors to develop in the youth, ideals and skills requisite o the maturing of their Christian personality so that they can bring a warmer love to the Home and to the Larger Community- the Church and the world.
