[edit] Mission statement

Saint Joseph’s High School is a Catholic secondary school, dedicated to transforming students in heart and mind, preparing them to serve God, the Church and the world.

[edit] History

Saint Joseph's High School began classes on September 20, 1953, as the first consolidated, co-institutional Catholic high school in the South Bend area. The school is very well known for its location; located directly across the street from the University of Notre Dame. Many visitors who come to Notre Dame football games in the fall know of Saint Joe solely on its location.

The school was made up of students from Central Catholic High School, Saint Hedwig School, Saint Joseph's Academy, and South Bend Catholic High School.

Contributions from South Bend and Mishawaka parishioners enabled building the school on 5.7 acres of land donated to the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend by the Brothers of Holy Cross.

From 1953 to 1968, Saint Joseph's High School had separate divisions for boys and girls. The faculty consisted primarily of Sisters of the Holy Cross and Brothers of Holy Cross. In 1968 the school became coeducational.

[edit] Current Issue

Currently, there is much dispute on moving its location closer to downtown South Bend where Notre Dame is building a shopping and apartment complex. The plan has many pros and cons. Some say the school stands as a landmark and is a perfect location for parents, students, and faculty. But an aging school over 50 years old is slowly beginning to cost the school too much for reperation costs. Others have called for a major renovation project. A decision will be made within the next 2-3 years.
