St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Salem, Oregon was founded in 1853 Fr. Cooke rented a building on the corner of Church and Chemeketa streets. This served as the parish until 1864. The sisters of the Holy arrived in 1863 and bought the building being rented for church services. It became the Sacred Heart Convent. The sisters then opened an academy with 80 students. The first Catholic church the parish owned named St. John’s Church, opened in 1864 on “Piety Hill.” In 1873, the sisters completed a new academy on the corner of Center and Cottage Streets. A new church located on the corner of Chemeketa and Cottage Streets was named St. Joseph Church and opened in 1889. The parish’s current church was dedicated in 1953. A new parish center was completed in 1999
