[edit] Athletics
In 2006, the school added middle school and varsity football to its athletic offerings, which also include: soccer, crew, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, golf, cheerleading, cross country, track, and softball. Although the school does not excell much in sports, it is superior in academic achievment.
In 2005, St. Johns hosted the 2A Fall Boys Soccer State Championship Tournament. The St. Johns boys had a 3-1 Semifinal finish against Montverde; the next night beating out Trinity Christian (Lake Worth) 2-1, for the first-ever St. Johns home field state championship win and third state title overall.
In 2004, the varsity girls soccer team made its first appearance in the state Final Four. They finished runners-up, losing 1-0 to American Heritage (Delray Beach). In 2005, they returned to the Final Four, winning their first state title, ousting American Heritage in a 4-3 penalty kick shootout. In 2006, they again returned to the Final Four, but were defeated in the first round by Orangewood Christian. In 2007, the team won the Class 2A State Championship against American Heritage (Delray Beach) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
[edit] Latin
St Johns is well renowned for its exceptional love of this ancient language. Many students enjoy(and sometimes hate themselves) for taking this difficult language. The Latin club has many things that it does, including parties directed by the officers, Olympika. Members of the club are allowed to attend the National Junior Classical League forum, which will be held in Ohio, at Miami University.
The officers of 2007-2008 are as follows:
Consul Primus: Rachel Robison
Consul Secundus: Lynn Killea
Aedael: Hillary Jackson
Scriba: Caroline Myers
Historian: Ryan Robinson
Treasurer: Maggie Mcgovern
Achievements of the Latin club include the success at Regional and State Latin forums for this year, the next challenge will be Nationals 2008. State competition yielded a project by the Scriba, a model of Sacred Roman Chickens as they might have (sorta) looked at the time of Publius Claudius Pulcher in the First Punic War.
[edit] Certamen
Certamen is a quiz bowl style game with a classical theme. Latin students at St Johns country day are encouraged by their primary Latin teacher, Leslie Perkins, to participate in local, regional, state, and national level competitions. At the end of 2008's season, the advanced team of Gary Baker and Rachel Robison made state level semifinals, the level two team of Lynn Killea, Brandon Harris, and Micheal Patterson came in second to The Oakhall School's team of Gabriel Molina and Alvin Wang, and the level one team captained by a legacy, Lynn's younger sister Allison, and comprised of John Henning, Austin Englbreight, and Mary Geary, scored sixth place. In addition, both Lynn Killea and John Henning have agreed to play for the State team and will be representing the state of Florida in the National competition this summer. Lynn Killea is quite a veteran of this game, and this will be her third year on the state team. In 2006 she and the team (Jose Molina, captain, Patrick Hunger, and Heather Clagett, also of St Johns) scored third place, after Texas and Massachusetts. In 2007, she captained the second place team (Heather Clagett, Gabriel Molina [Jose's little brother, yes], and Winston May. Also, in 2007, Gary Baker played for the second place level two team, who narrowly lost to Virginia in the last few moments. Leslie Perkins coached the 2007 level one team, which made second, and has always been influential in Lynn's training.
[edit] Motto
As thy days, so shall thy strength be. Deuteronomy
- Secondary motto: "WOLFS" as shouted by random humans rumored to be on the football team.
[edit] Art
St. Johns also has avid programs in the Visual Arts category. Almost all serious students are accepted into exceptional art collages, and those who are not serious enjoy themselves in the class. Among the various projects that were completed this year, the Freshman level I ceramics class made elephants of various types. The creativity of the students is great and varied, as some elephants had ear-piercings, interesting painted designes, fantastic color, and a few mohawks mixed in. the other projects of years past include penguins, and self portraits of the artist in a 100 years.
