The school dates back for over a half a century. There used to be huts where students would be taught and the outside toilets' outlines can still be seen on the walls. It was back then called St Margaret, before Queen Margaret Academy was built. It was then burnt down but then rebuilt into St. John's Primary. It was burnt down again. It was then rebuilt again but into the modern school that it is today.

St. John's is built as an open plan school. It has the infant wing and the upper wing. It has a gym which is multi purposed. Teaching areas are connected by doors and corridors. Two libraries. The music and Drama room, Recently changed from the GP room. Open areas. Medical Suite. Admin. areas, staff rooms and offices.

Maths Art Music French (P6 & P7 only) Keyboard (P6 & P7 only) P.E R.E These are in the 5-14 program because they must learn this for Queen Margaret Academy.

Boys : Polo shirt and Sweatshirt (blue) with gray or Black trousers Girls : Poloshirt and sweatshirt with knee-lenth skirts or Black or grey trousers.

When most pupils finish their course at St John's they go to Queen Margaret Academy, expected to do some of the course work introduced to them. They are in the Queen Margaret Academy cluster. This also includes St Ninian's Primary School, St Cuthberts Primary School, Good Shepherd Primary School, St Patricks Primary School and St. Ann's Primary School
