St. John's College, University of Hong Kong

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. John’s College is a constituent residential college of the University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong. Separately incorporated under a local ordinance, St.John's is often seen as enjoying more autonomous powers than any other residential hall dependent on the University. St. John's was founded in 1912 as the first residential hall in the University. Its predecessors are St. John’s Hall and St. Stephen’s Hall which were for boys and girls respectively. After the Second World War, in 1955, funded by the University and the Anglican Church, they were combined and moved to the junction of Pokfulam and Pokfield Road, renamed as the "College of St. John the Evangelist".

St. John's is one of the two colleges of the University, with Robert Black College being the other. St. John's now comprises Marden Wing, Aw Boon Haw Wing and Wong Chik Ting Hall. The former two provide accommodations for 223 undergraduates. Wong Chik Ting Hall is mainly for postgraduates and visiting students, providing accommodations for 111. The Master of the College is Rev. Paul Tong until April 2008. The new College Master is Rev. Chong after Rev. Tong retired in April 2008. The Dean of the undergraduate hall is Dr. Wong Kwok Chun, and the Dean of the postgraduate hall is Mr. Tang Hei Tim.
