In 1999, St. George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers combined to be named the St. George Illawarra Dragons. The Dragons made it to the Grand Final against the Melbourne Storm. The Dragons got out to a halftime lead of 14-0 until Storm made a second half comeback to win 20-18.

The Dragons were one of the top teams of 2004. They had big wins over the Penrith Panthers 44-18, the Wests Tigers 50-0. They also made there biggest comeback in the clubs short history and the second biggest of all time when they came from 34-10 down with 30 minutes to go to win 36-34 against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. They came 5th after the regular season only to be knocked out of the first week of the finals when they lost 31-30 against the Penrith Panthers.

The Dragons came the closest to their first Minor Premiership as they came 2nd after the regular season. The Dragons were on equal points with Minor Premiers Parramatta Eels on 36 points but the Eels had a greater points differential. The first assignment of the finals campaign was a Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks outfit and the Dragons came from 12-4 down at halftime to win 28-22. Then the Dragons had a week off then had a tough assignment against the Wests Tigers in the Preliminary Final. The Dragons were favourites for the game but the Tigers were just to strong on the night with a 20-12 win.

The Dragons finished in the top 8 once again for the 3rd time in a row. The Dragons lost five games in a row heading into round 24 then ended up winning there last three games of the regular season finishing 6th on the ladder. The first game in the finals was against the Brisbane Broncos with the Dragons winning the match 20-4. The following week the Dragons beat the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 28-0, that game ending Ben Kennedy's career. The Preliminary Final, The Dragons had a tough assignment facing Minor Premiers the Melbourne Storm but the Dragons were unable to get to the Grand Final once again with a 24-10 loss to the Storm.

2007 was a disappointing season for the Dragons. The Dragons were the first team to face the new team the Gold Coast Titans in round 1. The Dragons got out to a 20-6 lead mid-way through the second half until the Titans made a comeback but were unable to over come the Dragons with the Dragons winning 20-18. The Dragons lost there next 5 games, including the loss to the Sydney Roosters in round 7 to give the Roosters there 1000th victory. The Dragons finished 13th after the regular season.
