St. Francis River (Maine)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The St. Francis River is a small river in Maine, forming the international boundary between Canada and the U.S. It starts at the bottom of Lake Pohenegamook (Quebec side) in Estcourt Station, Maine, and goes down to the St. John River.
USS Bancroft (DD-256) became a Canadian ship as part of the Destroyers for Bases Agreement; and was named after the St. Francis River to follow the Canadian tradition of naming destroyers after Canadian rivers while recognizing the shared national history of the ship.[1]
