It is located in Laitumkhrah Road, sandwiched between NH 40 and Laitumkhrah main road. Its main gate is directly linked to NH 40, opposite to Fish Dale (Near Fire Brigade), Shillong. It has a green, sprawling campus with lots of buildings and sports facilities. The buildings in the campus includes the main college buildings, principal's office, library, counselling hall, Juvenate, Scholasticate, Chapel, School building, and some others. The sports facilities include a number of football and cricket grounds, basketball courts, volleyball court, and a squash court.

The campus has abundant greenery, with lots of trees and shrubs, which are well-maintained by its support staff. It also boasts of numerous flower gardens and lawns, as well as green houses. Academically, SEC has a long-standing good record. Its students have consistently figured in the Toppers' Lists of both MBOSE and NEHU year after year. The overall pass percentage is also excellent. National Assessment and Accreditation Council - NAAC has awarded the college the highest points ever awarded (87.5) to colleges in Eastern India, till date.

SEC was initially a boys' only college. Gradually, it has become a co-ed with seats available for girls in Higher Secondary (Commerce) and all the Degree Courses. Higher Secondary (Arts and Science), though, still offers seats for boys only.

The first Principal of SEC was Bro. J. E. McCann. The current Principal is Br. E. V. Miranda, cfc, from early 2006. This is his second term. His predecessor is Bro. L. D. Lobo, who had been appointed as Principal in St. Columba's, New Delhi (also a Christian Brothers' Institute).

Facta non Verba

"Deeds matter, friends, not words!"
Thus spake some learned guy.
He said the words in Latin,
'though, I really don't know why!

For those very words emblazoned in
Deep red on golden yellow,
say plainly that that "learned guy"
was a mighty silly fellow!

Or else among his flock of sheep,
there couldn't have been one, who said,
"If that's the case, good sir,
...how come they're said, not done!"

This irreverent doggerel verse was written by Sanjay Sharma,
an alumni of St Edmunds of the class of '80.
A journalist of 25 years, an occasional poet and author of several books,
Sharma is well known for his witty and tongue-in-cheek poetry and satire.
