St.Mary’s Church, Kakkanad

The St. Mary’s Church of kandanad (means a place which is seen by an important person in Kochi in this case king marthandavarma king of erstwhile travancore dynasty, when he was returning after a successful war) Kerala is believed to be being of centuries of aged. Since its inception, the church was renovated, remodeled and rebuilt on several occasions and the edifice in its present magnificent form appears to have been completed in AD 1910. Various stages of its construction are recorded at relevant portions in the mammoth structure. For instance, on the timber wall along the Madbho, it is inscribed: “the wood work completed in 1909, the gilt work in 1910 and the Holy Qurbono conducted on 9th Medam 1910”. Similarly the massive pillars erected at the outer corridor are etched with the year “1931”. Three bishops have come from this church

  • 1)kadumangalam thirumeni oathathios-ist bishop of Syrian church cochin diocese in early 18th cenrury hailing from karavattuveetil family
  • 2)ivanios-first bishop ordinated for Indian orthodox church ( kandanad diocese) buried in parumala from the same family
  • 3)ivanios -present bishop of jacobite church kandanad diocese from alunkal family. All three got there ordinations from patriatch of antioch spiritual leaderof syriac church

It resembles synagogue in many aspects

The church is a famous pilgrim center for Christians. It belongs to Kandanad diocese of Eranakulam.
