Stüssy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stüssy (or Stussy) is an American streetwear clothing company started by Shawn Stussy in Laguna Beach, California in 1980. One of their more famous tag lines is "Fresh Gear".

[edit] Early history

In 1980, Shawn Stussy was a surfboard shaper around Laguna Beach, California. In addition, he sold T-shirts with his distinctive drawn signature.

Stüssy clothing was started as a surf brand inspired by reggae musicians, skaters, hip hop, and DJs. Over time, it grew into more than just a surf brand, but became a general "streetwear" brand, which in turn helped propel Stüssy into an international label. The company now makes shirts, pants, caps, shorts, jackets and so on to accessories, bags, shoe collaborations and a women's line. For the past ten years Stüssy has been designed by Nick Bower, and Paul Mittleman.

In recent times, a Stussy Deluxe line has been established with latest styles from Stussy's finest offering, yet where cleanliness, construction, fabrication and fit are of the utmost importance. Stussy Deluxe is orchestrated and designed by Nicholas Bower.

Stüssy has over 60 retail stores around the world, which are referred to as "chapters". Many chapters produce special limited edition items exclusive to that particular chapter.

[edit] Competition

Some of Stussy's competitors have included obey, Supreme, and Zoo York. The Mossimo signature logo is highly derivative of the Stussy logo. The latter two are skateboard companies that have branched out to manufacture clothing. All share a similar casual street look in their designs.
