Støren  is a former municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway.

Støren was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Three other municipalities were later separated from it: Horg (1840), Soknedal (1841) and Budal (1880). Støren was merged together with Budal, Soknedal and Singsås to create the new municipality of Midtre Gauldal January 1, 1964.

Støren is today the administrative center of Midtre Gauldal.

[edit] The name

The parish is named after the old farm Støren (Norse Staurvin), since the first church was built there. The first element is staurr' m 'pointed pole', the last element is vin f 'meadow, pasture'. The word staurr are probably referring to the pointed headland made by the meeting of the two rivers of Gaula and Sokna - on which the church is lying.

[edit] Støren in the media

The Norwegian movie Bør Børson made Støren famous. In this movie, protagonist Bør Børson is visiting Støren bakery. This bakery is still running, and is high ranked.
