[edit] Category:Braintree, Massachusetts

Hi Srl! I removed [[Category:Braintree, Massachusetts]] from a few articles you tagged.

Mount Wollaston was once part of Braintree, but not until after the period of history discussed in the article. It would be more sensible to put all of Quincy in the Braintree category, but that's just confusing. The fragmenting of Braintree is discussed prominently in both the Braintree article and those of all the ex-Braintree towns, so I think it's best to leave it at that.

So far as I know, the Fore River Shipyard was never connected with Braintree, so I removed that from the category as well.

Neither Stephen Lynch nor Mark Wahlberg has any connection with Braintree that I can think of, nor could I find any connection after a quick googling. If you know of a reason either of them should be in a Braintree category, you can explain it on the talk page for the article or, better yet, amend the article itself (with references) so that the Braintree category doesn't seem randomly slapped-on and vandalish.

Also, when categorizing individuals from Braintree, you should put them in [[Category:People from Braintree, Massachusetts]]-- it's a little more organized than a catch-all Braintree category.

Anyways, let me know if you want help with any of this. I'll post a welcome message below with links you may find helpful.

Two more I've removed: Norwood Memorial Airport, which isn't in Braintree, and Red Line (MBTA). When you're wondering whether to put an article into a geographically-oriented category, look to see what categories it's already in. That'll give you an idea of what editors in the past have decided are appropriate sorts of categories for that article. It doesn't always work that way-- sometimes editors overlook things-- but when you look at something like the Red Line article, and see that it's not even in the Boston category, then it's worth clicking around to see how the article is organized. For the MBTA, many individual stations are placed in the category of the town they're in, but not the train as a whole. That would get too messy. And generally speaking, avoid putting something in a category unless you reeeeeeeally think it belongs there. Overcategorizing articles can make it hard for people to find what they're looking for.
Anyways, I hope you don't feel like I'm undoing all your good work-- you've made a lot of great edits, and I hope you keep it up! Fullobeans (talk) 11:00, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
Ok, a few more I've removed:
  • Webster Thayer lived in Worcester and Boston, and although he's associated a crime committed in Braintree, the trial was held in Dedham. I think it's enough that he can be reached through the Sacco and Vanzetti article.
  • "Politicians representing Braintree, Massachusetss" is a more appropriate category for Stephen Lynch (politician), except that Lynch represents nineteen additional towns. Twenty new categories at the bottom of his page would make a mess. I'm inclined to delete the category, because it can never be comprehensive-- for instance, Ted Kennedy also represents Braintree, but he can't rightfully be placed in 350 categories for every town he represents. If you're interested, though, a "Government" section à la Cohasset, Massachusetts could be beneficial to the Braintree article.
  • Similarly, Nordstrom is a national chain, and there's nothing noteworthy about the new Braintree location.
  • Leonard Hoar, as stated in his article, is buried in Quincy, Massachusetts-- not Braintree.
I think that's it-- most of your other edits look good! Fullobeans (talk) 21:58, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
