[edit] Industry
The Sriperumbudur story started when the first investment was done by Hyundai when it set up its factory in 1999. Set among rice fields and wetlands, sleepy Sriperumpudur jumped on to the world of manufacturing when Hyundai and Saint-Gobain ramped up their operations. Then it went into stealth mode till 2004, when the former Nokia CEO, Jorma Ollila, chose Sriperumbudur over Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi. There was no stopping the flow that was coming in to turn this sleepy village into a bustling global manufacturing hub.
Today, it has become a high-tech manufacturing cluster with more than $2 billion having been invested in the special economic zones where not only handset manufacturers but other electronic component makers such as Flextronics, Foxconn, Jabil, Perlos, Salcomp, Aspocomp as well as PC makers such as Dell have set up manufacturing facilities for millions of mobile phones, chargers, set-top boxes, PCs and telecom base stations.
Sriperumpudur is strategically placed on the Chennai-Bangalore highway, just about 40 kilometers from the main city, and offers all that the international giants want to get their business running in the country. Industrial infrastructure facilities are being constructed while the companies are in the process of setting up their units. With good highways and infrastructure and not being too far from a major metropolis (Chennai), Sriperumbudur offers all the facilities that these companies want. The town is also regarded as India's answer to Shenzhen [1], with its growth in electronic component manufacturing [2]
The area is also in contention to have a new International Airport built of 17 km². [3]
