[edit] History

The Regimental Headquarters was raised in Malay Street Colombo under the guidance of Brig S.B.G de Silva SLAVF and was later moved Punani and then to Kurunegala which is the present home of the Regiment.

The primary task of the Sri Lanka National Guard is to protect the villagers in the Northern and Eastern provinces where 21 of its battalions are deployed, and the services they have rendered in carrying out this job is commendable. Apart from village security, they provide a yeoman service in keeping the lines of communication open in the eastern province. The majority of the troops employed in Colombo security belong to the National Guard and are often seen at check points in the city.

The only other regiments of this type in Sri Lanka firsts begin the Colombo Town Guard that was raised during the two world wars. The Sri Lanka National Guard is not the Sri Lankan Home Guard which comes under the Department of Civil Defence.
