From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Square D is an American manufacturer of equipment used to control and distribute electric power headquartered in Palatine, Illinois.
First formed in 1903 as the McBride Manufacturing Company, they subsequently changed their name to the Detroit Fuse and Manufacturing Company with their logo being a "D" (for Detroit) enclosed in a square. In 1991, they were purchased by the French company Schneider Electric and they continue to sell into the commercial, industrial, and residential markets.
Introduced in 1955, their "QO" line of 3/4-inch circuit breakers may be their best-known product line, used in the electrical distribution boards of many homes in North America.
Another well-known Square D product line is the Powerlink circuit breaker, sold to bigger buildings/skyscrapers. It was created for lighting control and can remotely operate lights in buildings through the internet.
Their principal competitors include:
- Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation)
- Cutler-Hammer (Eaton Corporation)
- General Electric
- Benshaw
- Siemens
