[edit] Help Required
Hi,
First of all I appreciate your patience for taking the time to read this.
I am Amruta. I am a first year masters student, studying Human Computer Interaction at Georgia Tech. Currently i am enrolled in a course on online communities. As part of the course we are supposed to study an online community of our interest.
I went through wikipedia and was really amazed to find that they also had a site in Hindi. I found this really interesting and so thought about exploring how the content differs when the language changes, how people access wikipedia when it is in a different langugae or specifically when it is their mother tongue.
And so the theme for my project is
Wikipedia is available in many different languages. While the interface and concept stay the same, the content and the way people utilize it seem to be significantly different from one language to another. I can see this clearly when I compare the Hindi and English versions. How does culture effect the content and the way people participate in creating it? Which features stay the same? Which features are more exploited in different languages/cultures? If there are similar sites to Wikipedia in their original language, why do those subjects prefer (or do they) to participate in Wikipedia rather than the other alternative?
As part of this project we are supposed to interview 3 people from the community we are studying. The final result of this paper will be to write a paper based on our findings. I have a project group of 3 people all of different nationalities, one Turkish and another Spanish. I was trying to find indian and hindi speaking users for this and came across your name on wikipedia and so i thought you might be able to give me some insight on this.
The main reason to write to you is, i would really appreciate it if you could be one of my subjects for conducting an interview as you might be able to give me some insight into this issue. Participation in my study is completely voluntary. Your name or personal details will never be revealed to anyone during this course.
In case you have any doubts you can go through this page http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/AY2005/cs6470_spring/researchstudy/
Waiting to hear from you.
Thanks a lot for your time again, Amrutasl 23:16, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Shahsagar's images
Greetings. Those images were taken by Shahsagar, and uploaded to Wikipedia in late 2004. The uploading page specifically says that you upload an image that you own the copyright for, you agree to license it under the GFDL. Shahsagar checked the box (or he couldn't have uploaded it; therefore he released them under the GFDL. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 20:40, May 23, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] About Image:Maha shoretemple.jpg
Hello Spundun, thanks for bringing the copyright issue to my notice. I talked to the copyright owner and he is more than willing to release the image under GFDL. Pls let me know the procedure to follow. Jay 10:30, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
- Hey thanks for the reminder. I went to the Wikipedia:Template_messages/Image_namespace page but not sure which tag to give, there are many tags under the GNU section itself. Can you suggest a tag, since you have been following the image tagging process. Jay 07:27, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Hey I've tagged it as suggested. I don't think the owner has a hi-res pic. Jay 15:11, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] English in Devanagari script
Hi Spundun, my question is, how to write english vowels in devanagari. Indian Airlines is written as "इंडियन एयरलाइन्स", how do you use the ऍ, ऎ, ए, ऐ, ऑ, ऒ und ओ? How to write get, gat, gate and bot, boat, bought? And "there are snakes in the hole" and "there are snacks in the hall"? — Murtasa 15:47, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Early Morning on the Ganges
Hi Spundun:
Thanks for uploading the photo to the Commons. I am glad you liked the photo. It does make me feel homesick every time I look at it for, although I have only lived in India for three years (plus several shorter trips), I grew up in Trinidad in the West Indies with both Hindus and Muslims as next door neighbours and close childhood friends. In fact, I have always felt more at home in India than I did in my homeland, Canada, or in Australia (where I know live).
Do you think I should be uploading all of my photos that I have put into the Wikipedia into the Commons? Is this easy to do? I am still a bit of a novice and have little time for exploring all the possibilities as I am trying to finish editing a book for publication (an annotated translation of a 2nd century Chinese text on the countries to the West of China including India, Parthia and the Roman Empire). This is taking up almost any free time I have.
Cheers, and thanks again,
John Hill
Hello again!
Thanks so much for your clear yet detailed answer to my inquiry. I will give it a go as soon as I can spare some time.
Cheers and best wishes,
John Hill

[edit] Red link recovery project
Howdy, Topbanana here, back after an extended absence. I've decided to round up a few of my more useful reports into a project with the goal of converting as many "red links" (links to non-existant articles) into "blue links" (links to real articles). As you've been active in fixing similar things in the past, I thought I'd let you know in case you're interested in joining up. If not, I won't be offended - we've all got lots todo here :) - TB 11:39, 2005 Jun 23 (UTC)

[edit] Indian English
Hi, do you think a Wikipedia in English, written in Devanagari script is a good idea? There are many speakers in India, and it could be much easier for them to read and write a phonetic English in Devanagari than in original English with this irregular orthography. For example, the letter ऊ can be written in at least ten ways, gnu, who, root, shoe, fruit, blue, two, through, crew, you, ... Articles in Devagari could then easyly be transcripted (by a bot?) into the other Indian scripts like Gujarati, Bangali, Tamil aso. — Murtasa 8 July 2005 00:43 (UTC)

[edit] Images in public domain?
Hey, need your help on some images. There are some film stars images copied from bollywood4u.com which in turn has copied the images from different sites. Its disclaimer says that it "assumes" that the images are in public domain. The uploader has used this to claim that the images are in public domain. Can you point me to some talk page where we can discuss about it. I've listed the images at the uploader's talk page - User_talk:Plumcouch#Images_from_bollywood4u. Jay 17:52, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Maps
Hi Spundun, Thanks for your comments.
- The maps follow the wiki map guidelines, and are created with some reference maps and GPS systems like Google Earth. However, I should caution you that the co-ordinates are only approximate at this stage.
- To me, creating each district separately (as for Karnataka or Maharashtra), though fairly simple, seemed to be an overkill; unless you want to detail out each district at higher resolution, with all cities, roads, rail, etc. Doesn't make sense to me otherwise, just more images without any added value. (Also, unfortunately, the articles they go into are just stuby at the moment).
- Well, there is a high res blank map (without any text) of the whole state here in the same category. I think it may server your purpose where you can use it as the base graphic. It is meant to be used in this fashion anyway :-).
- If required, I can help create the same maps with Gu text for gu.wikipedia.
Cheers! --ΜιĿːtalk 07:37, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Indian language Wikipedias
I was somewhat active on Hindi wikipedia at one point, though (shamefully) I found it quite difficult to not only write Hindi using the keyboard, but even coming up with formal Hindi sentences without any English words. I also tried a bit to spread the word about the Hindi wikipedia among Hindi bloggers who churn out good quality blog article in Hindi on a daily basis. I don't know how much it helped, but I haven't seen any increase in the number of articles (seems to be struck at 1000, and most of them are stubs anyway.) Doesn't look like a wikipedia in world's 2nd/3rd most spoken language. deeptrivia (talk) 06:46, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, writing in hindi and gujarati has been difficult for me also, esp. since last time I used it in school tests was in highschool and I am sure its the same with you. I think I can communicate my emotions better in gujarati but for technical stuff english ends up being more comfortable. The trick is to be persistant, eventuall you do get better :). --Spundun 07:01, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll love to improve. What do you use to write Hindi? I know of this, which is quite decent. deeptrivia (talk) 07:08, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Dude,, checkout this page Wikipedia:Enabling complex text support for Indic scripts . That should be able to give you a lot more info. All the recent OS's come with builtin support for devnagari input, though you have to explicitly enable it since its not installed by default. Also checkout the keyboard maps I put at the bottom of that page. Good luck --Spundun 07:20, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hindi logo
Hiya, a month ago someone wrote to helpdesk-l saying:
jus logged on to wikipedia first time today...amazing site... but was dissapointed to see that when we go to the Hindi language page. The spelling near the wikipedia logo which is the translation of "the free encyclopedia" is spelled wrongly in hindi. Dont know how i can edit it so writin this mail so that someone can change the same. It has to be spelled "Azaad" and not "Ajhaad" as it is now (in Hindi ofcourse). Cant type in hindi here so you can maybe consult anyone who knows hindi and they will tell you. "Z" as in zoo rather than "Jh" as it now.
Can you see what needs to be done about it if anything? Cheers, Alphax τεχ 09:04, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request,Nomination for removal of Khalistan article
Hello Sir I'm nominating this page for deletion because it is written with a point of view , excessive use of unreliable sources.and the title "Khalistan" is wrong for the topic because "Khalistan" does not exist, lack of support from resident Punjabi's and Sikhs in India, but there was a "Movement for Khalistan" and that is the right title for the topic, and i think this whole article "a new name" should be rewritten with the help of people from sikh community "in" India and other Indians, because this topic is related to politics/people of India. We all should understand Khalistan is not a political entity and having a article is not justified, Microsoft Encarta and Britannic encyclopedia don't have an article known as "Khalistan" but they do have articles on the movement that took place decades back, and i think there are also copyright issues involved with this article because big parts of this article are written on other peoples research. Many reliable sources are used to show "one side" of their view on the topic, there are also indications that organisations banned by US and EU are involved in providing their research on the movement.I am a strong supporter to have a stub on this topic , but im afraid that such articles on wikipedia have become mouthpieces for organisation which are known for disrupting peace (assassination of one of india's prime minister, twin bomb blast in New Delhi on the eve of Diwali) in Indian sub continent. This article requires your attention , please help. Anmol.2k4 18:50, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
