[edit] History

The chain was started in Edinburgh by Kim Culley and Barbara Leggate. The decision to start the business was taken following dissatisfaction with their jobs along with the choice of takeaway foods available to them. The initial store in Edinburgh opened as a take-away, but the format for more modern stores has been to provide in-store seating or to be positioned in food courts at shopping centres.

Following the success of the initial business, British School of Motoring (BSM) took over the business, as both businesses had common franchising ambitions. BSM provided the necessary skills and resources to help further expand the chain throughout Britain. The assisted with matters such as corporate image, new product ideas and equipment.

The company is now a family owned concern, (after separating from BSM) and operates a mix of company owned city centre and shopping centre outlets as well having some sites operated under franchise.[1]

The company's mission statement is: "To provide the highest quality fresh and healthy food, which satisfies every taste and budget".[2] From the outset the founders decided to specialise in baked potatoes meaning the end product is significantly healthy compared with other fast-food chains.

[edit] Food

Spudulike has always specialised in a straight-forward and simple menu, whereby you can choose from a variety of fillings to put into a baked potato. Typically the fillings include: baked beans, chicken tikka, chili con carne, grated cheese, coleslaw, cottage cheese, egg mayonnaise, prawn cocktail and tuna & sweetcorn[3]. Potatoes are baked in ovens just behind the counter, are prepared in front of the customer and served in a polystyrene dish with spork and knife.

Spudulike also offers a selection of side salads, deserts, hot and soft drinks to provide a complete meal[4].

[edit] Locations

Spudulike offers a number of outlets based in high-streets, shopping centre food courts in a variety of locations throughout England, Northern Ireland and Scotland. A number of outlets also feature in the food courts at McArthur Glen Group's designer outlets in Britain.
