[edit] History
Springwells Township was formed by an act of territorial governor Lewis Cass on January 5, 1818, but the boundaries were not firmly designated until 1827. The township was named for the many natural springs that dotted the landscaped. Earlier, French explorers had named the area "Belle-Fontaine", French for "Beautifal Fountain".
Divided many times, by the 1850's the township bordered Detroit to the east, Greenfield Township to the north, Redford Township to the northwest, Dearborn Township to the west, Ecorse Township to the south, and the Detroit River to the east.
