Sports Overnight America

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sports Overnight America is national sports radio show recorded Tuesday-Friday from 1-6 a.m. est. The show is part of the Sports Byline USA network in San Francisco, California. It is hosted by Larry Krueger and Chris Townsend.

Not your typical sports talk show, it does offer listeners the opportunity to discuss today's results, topics and debate tomorrow's possibilities, while also presenting the day's scores, top stories, analysis and highlights. What makes it different is the contrast of personalities of it's hosts:

San Diego native, Townsend, is a former baseball player at San Jose` State University and is the more brash and, in a playful way, abrasive the two hosts. It is not uncommon for Townsend to go off on a tangent regarding topics other than sports. Most of this is done in an intelligent and entertaining way. Townsend's favorite target is show producer, Gerrie Burke. Burke has been working in the radio industry both on air, and as a producer since the late 1980s, (Most notably in Boston, New York City, Baltimore, and Washington, DC) and it is apparent that these two have known each other for years. Most of what is said is obviously done in jest, with Townsend referring to Burke as "The Flake," and Burke referring to Townsend as "The Prima Donna." They "argue" about such hot topics as "Whose turn is it to make the coffee." "What to order from the takeout places in and around their studio in downtown San Francisco." Townsend's assertion is that they need to hire a new producer and get 'That Stoner' (Burke) out from behind the glass for the good of the show. This is also done in jest, and Townsend also tends to laud Burke as a "Radio Survior, and Vagabond." They constantly argue about the music used as rejoiner music for their show. Burke tends to lean towards more obscure classic rock tunes which Townsend constantly claims he has never heard.

Krueger, who is a lifetime San Franciscan, on the other hand, is the more pragmatic of the two, and has a near encylopedic knowledge of statistics. He is far less abrasive than Townsend, and seems to have a more easy going relationship with both his guests, and callers.

Both Townsend and Krueger were show hosts on KNBR-680 in San Francisco. Their nightly show is produced by former KNBR Producer, "Dead Air" Gerrie Burke.

Long time San Francisco sports talk host Patrick Mauro hosts Sports Overnight America Weekends, Sunday, and Monday mornings 1-6am EST.
