A Sport utility wagon is the most common body type for an SUV.

The earliest example of a vehicle shaped like the modern day SUV was the Ford Model T. However during the early 20th century, 4 wheel drive wasn't a common feature for automobiles.
The earliest SUVs to have serious off-road capability were the Willys army jeeps which wern't station wagons, but convertibles. The first sport utility wagon to have off-road capability was the Dodge Caryall of the late-1940s.
