[edit] TRM18
Hello, This is TRM18 and I am working on the Watertown, SD page. I am a student for Northern State University and this page is my assignment for the final. I am only trying to help the page and I would hope that if you have any concerns regarding this page that you email me (trmischke@wolves.northern.edu) telling me what you feel is needed. Thank you!
I am deleting the information and then within the next couple of days I am redoing the pages. I feel that I can do this because I have created the pages. Thank you for your concern, TRM18TRM18
OK, seriously, what is your problem?! Are you so insecure that you need to go around and delete everyone else's information just to make yourself feel better? Wow, that's really pathetic. What my fellow classmates have posted is excellent, factual information that I believe benefits the pages. I am sorry if I am being a little harsh, but someone should go out and play a little game of "hide-and-go fuck yourself". --Halo2 Gamer 17:35, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you
It's an uphill battle keeping the Aberdeen page encyclopedic. I'm beginning to wonder if we need to request semi-protection for it. ObtuseAngle 21:14, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
- Just protecting it from the NSU students and their IP address would propably do it. They have claimed that they have to do this for a class, so theat will be the only real way to stop them. Spiesr 21:16, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
- The request for protection died due to no response. Spiesr 15:52, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Using the "Username" templates
It's best to "subst:" the username templates:
- {{subst:UsernameConcern|reason for objection}}
- {{subst:UsernameDiscussion}}
- {{subst:UsernameAllowed}}
Typing something into that "reason for objection" space tells the user just what you find worrisome about the name, like "Bitches" is considered a rude and insulting word, definitely not a good thing in usernames.
I have now taken the liberty to re-edit User talk:Duesh is back bitches to add the "subst:" but did not add a reason.
One advantage of "subst:" is that when that user edits the page to reply, the full text of your message (not just the template tag) will be visible in edit mode, so he can reply point by point if he likes.
Also note that the template will add the four-tildes signature for you, so you needn't add it yourself. This is explained on the template's page. -- Ben 08:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] South Dakota Counties
Hello.
Thank you for adding infoboxes to South Dakota's counties, but please use the latest {{Infobox U.S. County}} infobox. The infobox you're adding has, among other things, unneeded "map" and "map size" variables. Additionally, the newer template is much easier to use: just copy/paste from {{Infobox U.S. County}}.
Thanks again for your work. /Timneu22 00:57, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hi, this is John Mink (CyArk intern)
Hello, I would like to ask why it is that you removed the external links for CyArk on various Wikipedia pages, including Deadwood and Salvador De Bahia. Cyark is a nonprofit hi-definition heritage network employing 3D laser scanning at UNESCO sites worldwide for educational purposes, and has partnerships with prominent University and national institutions worldwide including UC Berkeley in California, University of Ferrara in Italy, ITABC, American Museum of Natural History, etc. (please see http://archive.cyark.org/partners.php for a complete list). It is a legitimate, noncommercial, archival site with a tremendous amount of information that could benefit those seeking further information on endangered sites. As a UC Berkeley undergraduate and a CyArk intern, I have taken it upon myself to provide wikipedia links because I believe the organization's mission is appropriate to an encyclopedic setting, and not simply an advertisement - there is nothing to sell, and the images are under creative commons licenses.
I would very much like an explanation for your cursory edits, particularly as you left links such as this one: http://www.marcioguide.com/ (under the heading "Salvador Bahia") which is an advertising page for a taxi operator. Did you even look at the CyArk site? I feel that hasty actions such as yours in this matter continue to endanger the legitimacy of Wikipedia as a site that is taken seriously by the academic community. Thanks, I look forward to your explanation.
Please note that this (and similar) responses were written by me as an individual on my own computer on my own time, and do not reflect official policy of CyArk or its affiliates. I have been a wikipedia user for a long time, though not an active editor, and grow weary with thousands of external links to commercial travel sites and the like which are never edited out, while legitimate educational resources are. For further reference, if you look at the Tikal page there is an article which has been linked for a long time http://vrm.vrway.com/issue24/SHOOTING_THE_MAYAN_PYRAMIDS_OF_TIKAL_FOR_UNESCO.html about the work CyArk does. There are also several links on the page to commercial travel sites seeking to sell tour packages, which I took the libery of pointing out were commercial sites.
I apologize for the exasperated tone of these messages, but I am a person who would really like to see wikipedia be a more legitimate source for academics as well as casual users. To reiterate, I feel that removing links to relevant major university-affiliated sites, including ones posted by enthusiastic student interns with knowledge of what they are talking about, undermines this potential. Thanks for listening.
--John Mink, Cyark intern —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.105.44.107 (talk) 05:09, 18 April 2007 (UTC).
Spiesr wrote (on Cyark's talk page): "I suggest that you read WP:SPAM. I deleted these links because they promote a service/product. (Nonprofit or not that is still spam.)) If they had been on a page which they had relevant information for, such as an article about the service itself, they could have stayed, but they did not contain relevant information about the articles from which they were removed. Spiesr 16:44, 18 April 2007 (UTC)"
Hello,
Thank you for the response. With all due respect, however, these links are not spam. There is no specific promotion of a service/product, there is nothing to sell through the site - all the images are under creative commons licenses for public and educational use. Cyark is supported by grants from national institutions, NGOs, site authorities, and educational institutions. People are paid to perform the work, but people are paid to perform academic research as well - and the pay for Cyark work comes from the same sources that power academic research, primarily public ones. By your logic, all academic research is also promoting a service/product, and in this case the product is knowlegdge and unfiltered information. If you really wish to exclude professional academic research and knowledge production from wikipedia, including that which is freely available to the public, then what is left?
Enthusiastic amateur sites, such as the one you left up for Tikal at http://www.authenticmaya.com/authentic_maya.htm, are still used as promotional sites (in this case, to sell rum and site tours) and, in addition, do not even have trasparency as to their affiliations and references. In short, they are not academic, though they may be adequate. Even "official" government sites, such as the national park of Tikal site, are involved in selling a promotion or service - getting tourists to visit the site.
Again, I'm not sure you even looked at the links I put up, but they led to sites with nothing but a series of enlargeable thumbnails containing detailed architectural, photographic, three-dimensional, and panoramic images of the park with commentary from site authorities and academic researchers. There was no service for sale, there is no "product" per se beyond publicly available archival information, and the direct links I put up did not even have any indication of the identity of Cyark or its mission unless you chose to search to the root website - mainly because Cyark's purpose is education and the application of new technologies (that we do not sell) in its service, not moneymaking. I would like to put these links back up because I feel they would be of use to those who wish to gain access to detailed archival images and maps of these World Heritage Sites, and I feel these are relevant links to the sites themselves. I would, however, be happy to remove the reference to Cyark in the links themselves and simply refer to them as Mapping, Hi-Definition Data Capture, Photographic, Panoramic, and 3D Imaging sites.
--John Mink, Cyark Intern (I am using the Cyark wikipedia ID to afford a measure of transparency)
- Fine, put the links back up. On a differnt note, remeber to sign messages on talk pages by typing ~~~~ as this links to your userpage. Spiesr 22:13, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, much obliged. I will pay more attention to proper process in the future. Cyark 00:10, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Hill City South Dakota
Thank you for editing the Points of Interest section on the Hill City South Dakota page, I am new to Wikipedia and have just started figuring out all the the tricks of the trade. Feel free to do more editing of this page in the future. Although Hill City is a small town it has a lot of character - and hey its where I grew up! Lmielke359 14:52, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
I am wondering if you can take a look at the Hill City, South Dakota page and let me know what is good and what should go. I have included every topic that I can think of. Things that still could be done are the adding of picures and the using books as sources - right now I only have websites as sources. Soon I will be ready to tackle bigger projects - like the Black Hills page. Thanks. Lmielke359 00:05, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

The manual of style makes Wikipedia's policies regarding date linking very clear. Likewise, fair use image policies are clear as well. If you would like to discuss either of these further, that would be great, but do not re-add the show image or remove date links again. Rklawton 19:20, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
If you continue to revert appropriate edits - especially without discussing them - I will block you from editing. Rklawton 19:22, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The Baan Dek Montessori
We are new to Wiki but quite curious as to why you decided to delete The Baan Dek Montessori from the list of Sioux Falls, South Dakota private schools. [edit] Reported for vandalism
You have been reported for vandalism against custerwest.org's history portal on several occasions. Custerwest (talk) 19:33, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- First I have a question. Where am I reported for vandalism? I checked your contributions and did not see it anywhere. Second, you statement says I have committed vandalism against custerwest.org, I don't see how this is possible as in order to do that I would have to go to that website and vandalize something there, which I have not. The only place where I could have committed vandalism is Wikipedia, and any such vandalism would be against Wikipedia itself and not another entity. Spiesr (talk) 19:41, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] djhd
Can you let me know why the Tableau Software page was deleted? It is a Business Intelligence company and I wanted to include it on the list of BI products —Preceding unsigned comment added by Djhd (talk • contribs) 20:24, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- It was delted because the article seems to be blatant advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam. Spiesr (talk) 20:26, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
- How is that different from the other 29 companies that are listed here: Business_intelligence_tools? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.248.129.126 (talk) 02:18, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

- Unlike the other pages this page appeared to be essantially an ad. Also I do not have the power to delete pages only admins can do that. Your page was actually deleted by User: WBOSITG. I just tagged the page as a canidate for deletion as it appeared to be a page for promotional purposes. Your statements about the company have no relation to the decision if the article would be kept. If you want to have the deletion reconsidered you can try a deletion review. Spiesr (talk) 13:40, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Magillem page deletion
Hello, Magillem page I created was deleted straightforward without any chance to add deeper content. Why?
- As you can see in IP-XACT, 2 companies out of 15 don't have their page despite they are contributing members of the standard.
- I expected other people working in Academic Institutions or big companies from the semiconductor industry to let some interesting data
- Besides their commercial product, they have several non-profit partnerships and programs: R&D Programs, Academic Programs, European Projects. They are steering contributing member of The SPIRIT Consortium.
- Their core platform is given almost for free. Customers are only paying for services building custom business layers on the top of their core platform. I don't know lot of companies "giving" their core technology. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bblanc (talk • contribs) 22:19, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

- All commercial companies having a page on wikipedia are there for promotional purposes, aren't they? For example in the 13 presented in IP-XACT, I didn't see any non-profitable purposed company. Magillem only sales service, it's their business and I don't really care. I'm interesting in sharing information I find useful to share with others from my standpoint, especially their involvement in Academic Programs which helps a lot in IP-XACT works.
- My statements above are what I would have been pleased to argue, if I had the chance to. I didn't have this chance: this is strange to me for an open community to avoid dialog using administrating rights to delete pages without notification.
- Thanks a lot for the tip to get the page reconsidered :)

[edit] My article
It is a notable published fanzine, and just because you are some american that hasn't heard of it doesn't mean it isn't notable! it is notable over in England, and articles of other fanzines go untouched such as The Mag and NUFC.com. Mackemfixer (talk) 14:38, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Geminate
Dear user,
A few ago I have created a page for "Geminate Recombination". This is a very important kinetic theory, that is widely used by scientists.
Indeed, my version of the page was poorest possible, but as I stated - this is just to prepare the ground for my future editing this topic, thus including this theory at Wikipedia.
HOWEVER, you chose to ignore this and marked this page for deletion, without even waiting one week to see how this page will evolve!
It can very well be that, technically, this was a "good" deletion (which currently this topic does not appear at all at Wikipedia!) and I will gracefully accept your, unthoughtful, speedy and un-needed, request for deletion.
As you wish. I will not appeal the decision, nor will I take the time to create a solid page for this value.
Cheers, Omer. (user: omermar, date 18/5/08).
BTW - feel free to google "geminate recombination" to see how many research papers use it. Maybe next time you could give others some credit?
