[edit] Is this entry necessary?

This page is filled with really crappy filling that has no backing in the comics, like the suit controlling his "unstable" powers. This has been created from nowhere -- all that was said was that it would help him be all he could be. — ChocolateRoses talk

You know what isn't filled with crappy filling? These Hostess™ Fruit Pies! Yum! Try to be more positive! --Chris Griswold 06:37, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
You're doing it again. I just made what i felt was a valid point. Please do not critisize, as surely you yourself are then being negative. i find this sort of thing on every page you contribute to. I know you put in a lot of work but i think i'd rather have advice on the article than the discussion, thanks. Don't be a dick lol! I think my point is most valid if you just read the article. It feels too vague and poorly done at the moment, although i appreciate why it was set up as a seperate article and actually fully support it. — ChocolateRoses talk
I didn't work on this page at all. This is all Kozmik Pariah's work. Why would you then come in and tell him it's shitty filler? Either edit or offer advice; just don't shit all over his work. I'm not this article's biggest fan, but I'm not calling it shit because that doesn't help anyone.
As for what I said to you, how was that negative? I suggested you be more positive. What "kind of thing" do you find on every page I contribute to? Do you object to Hostess™ Fruit Pies? --Chris Griswold 10:06, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
you just seem to pop up with ur two cents. and i didnt call it shit, dont misquote me. i sed there was crappy filler, but most is good. thats like me saying you called me a prick/cock/dickhead (whatever u wana call it where ur from) just because you sed "don't be a dick" about a trillion times, and i'm sure you don't think i'm a prick/cock/dickhead :P lol! It's no big deal, i really don't want this convo -- can people just makesure they have the comics in hand or some clear sources before making any claims and that no opinions or vagueries are given. thankyou. — ChocolateRoses talk
Wow, what a poorly-written article. It's not a mere cut-and-paste of the main Spider-Man, because for the most part, that writing was good. Time to get editing. BryanEkers 20:05, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Actually, this isn't all mine at all. Anyway. Most of the stuff I put in it are from OHotMU, the semi-bi to quad-annual issues that tend to rundown his powers, Marvel Encyclopedia: 1 (Marvel) and 4 (Spidey), and Ultimate Spider-Man guide. Yup. And if you don't like the writing style or whatever, fix it. I've saw worse on here than mine with less complaints. --Kozmik Pariah 05:53, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
The source needs to be cited, and we need to avoid encyclopedic sources (like OHOTMU) except for in comparison and analysis, since they have a license to use the characters which we don't have. Anyway, I do think that the tone of the discussion has been particularly harsh. The information's there, if you have a problem with spelling/grammar/tone/etc change it yourself, no need to be so mean. --Newt ΨΦ 06:35, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
I noticed that too. And that's more or less what I was sayin'. Also: if it needs source references, but avoiding ohotmu/etc... where are the sources coming from? From what I see, everyone's using the comics and stuff as sources, also. (not to sound smart)--Kozmik Pariah 08:48, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm wondering why this page has been allowed to exist. Is there really any reason for it? A similar page to this one based on some of the physical feats of Namor was deleted not too long ago as was a page, many months ago, going into detail about Wolverine's abilities. Odin's Beard 02:11, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Tha main reason is that it was cluttering the main Spider-Man page. Spider-Man has no less than 12 different powers (which recently changed drastically), 10+ costumes (ok, only 4-6 are all that important), plus weapons and stuff. Some of them are a little tricky and unusual, like the spider-sense and "iron spider" costume (which used to have its own article!). A day or two ago someone asked on Talk:Spider-Man why there was no article on the Spider-Mobile. That's why this article is here. (It's also been rather drastically cleaned up since June.) -HKMARKS 02:26, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

So, basically almost all the junk that's been deemed unimportant and not worth mentioning in the Spider-Man article itself. Odin's Beard 23:37, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

The Spider-Man article is an overview of *everything* to do with the character; supporting characters, villains, television shows and titles are likewise on separate pages and even so it's over 45kB. There's outside press coverage of this stuff, and Superman has one too, for the same reasons. Hey, you can always nominate it for afd if you want. (I personally just never want to have to explain web-shooters again ever.) - HKMARKS 00:24, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
I'd say this page is as valid as, say, the aforementioned Superman page, Iron Man's armor, Batman's utility belt, etc. - Pennyforth 18:47, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
It would be so if it was on the web-shooters only. This article should be merged with the fictional history of Spider-Man. Evren Güldoğan 23:26, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The wiki tags..

Maybe it's just me but I think we're going a bit overboard on the tags at the top. Some of them are redundant and I don't think they're all applicable. But I'm not sure which ones to remove and which ones to leave. Any opinions on the matter? Errick 10:04, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

I removed a few inapplicable ones. --Newt ΨΦ 13:55, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Im gonna take the expert tag down. Hope no one minds, but there is no "expert" on Spider-Man. Not even Stan Lee himself could know everything going on now. The "cite sources" one is enough to cover its sentiment.— ChocolateRoses talk

[edit] Sense of Humor

I added a bit about his sense of humor, based off some ideas talked about on the discussion page of the main Spider-Man article. I feel like the placement is awkward, though. Any thoughts? Dustin 22:03, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

How about that it shouldn't really be in an article focusing in on Spider-Man's powers and abilities. It's more of a characteristic that Spider-Man has. More recently Peter has had it more and more, as well. It's embedded in his personality and has a very tenuous link to his powers.— ChocolateRoses talk

In fact I'm taking it down. Your comment about Yiddish is actually because you're an Ultimate Spider-Man reader. Brian Michael Bendis is the jewish writer and often his characters tell jewish/ yiddish jokes. Peter is Christian by birth and the 616 spidey has very rarely used yiddish jokes if ever! This section should go in the main article and the Yiddish stuff should go in Ultimate spider-man's own article. thanx — ChocolateRoses talk

I tried putting it in the main article once, and someone added the Yiddish there. I didn't get it, but after someone deleted it from the main article I put it back here and left the Yiddish in, assuming someone smarter than I knew what it meant. Oh well, I guess it's not that important. Dustinroolez 10:13, 7 July 2006 (EDT).
Spider-Man's Christian? When's he say that? --Newt ΨΦ 02:54, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Didn't you see the animated How Spider-Man Saved Christmas special? I think it's available on DVD BryanEkers 04:51, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

He prays to god a few times, he talks to him loads, he celebrtes christmas and he's american. He's christian, they just try not to give some heroes strong religious beliefs for controversy. He's definately not jewish. the odd "oy" is said by everyone, especially a new yorker from what i understand and bendis is unmistakably jewish in both interviews and his writing it shines through whether he's saying it or talking yiddish. its nothing to do with spider-man specifically.— ChocolateRoses talk
Spider-Man is Protestant Christian. There's plenty of evidence in the comics showing it, and his religious side is shown in the comics quite often.

[edit] HTML comments

There's a lot of problems with this article (as the tags at the top indicate), but one of the more irritating things is HTML comments with discussions embedded in the text. Many Wiki editors are not familiar with such a format and it can lead to confusion, not to mention inflating the page's KB size, causing problems with some browsers when editing. Such comments, which mostly relate to sources, should be moved to the talk page and proper sources inserted in the article. - dharmabum 11:15, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

i DIDNT THINK IT WAS THAT BAD. I ADDED ONE FOR SHORT-TERM USE TO JUSTIFY A CHANGE COS I KNOW SOME PPL IGNORE THE DISCUSSION PAGE AND I THINK I RESPONDED TO ONE IN THE ARTICLE. THATS ALL. DONT HAVA COW MAN (SOZ, CAPS, TOO LAZY TO CHANGE HALFWAY though :) )
I'm not "hava cow man", I'm pointing out that embedded HTML comments are generally frowned upon, except for some specific instances. They aren't a way to justify a change - a good source is usually best for that - and discussion about such changes belongs on the talk page so people who don't think to go trolling through source code can participate. It's Wiki policy, not a personal gripe. - dharmabum 23:08, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Enhanced vision

There's a section on the page dedicated to Spider-Man's newly acquired nightvision ability, but what about his enhanced normal vision? By which I mean, how he went from someone who couldn't see without his glasses, to a man with (possibly better than) perfect vision. Afterall, it was a side-effect of the spider bite. In my eyes (no pun intended), it's as much of a power/ability as any of the others.

His vision is better than 20:20, but 20:20 isn't actually "perfect". However, you're right, that should probably be mentioned among his original "powers." -- HKMARKS 19:43, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merge with Iron Spider

I don't see why the "Iron Spider" article needs to exist -- it's not that signifigant and this article has more information anyway. I've already written a merged version. Say the word and I'll put it up. -- HKMARKS 13:28, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Well... did it. - HKMARKS 16:35, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding Official Marvel Handbook to the Marvel Universe

The OHOTMU is an encyclopedic, tertiary source. While it was published by Marvel and is technically canon (unless contradicted in story), stats derived from it should be backed up by in-story information as much as possible. See Wikipedia:Reliable_sources. Also, assume good faith. -- HKMARKS 19:33, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Recent issue of Civil War: Battle Damage Report put Spider-Man in at class 25 strength, which is actually quite a jump from his usual original class 10 and post-queen class 15 strength. Since Civil War: Battle Damage Report isn't a OHOTMU issue, would that count enough as a source? Or would we have to wait for a issue to explicitly state how much they can lift, i.e. Hulk's 150 billion ton mountain lifting/holding up feat from Secret Wars? Sera404 00:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] References and Issue numbers

I'm adding a number of requests for issue number sources throughout the article. Please don't remove these without adding the issue numbers -- EVEN THOUGH some of these may seem very obvious. For most of these there doesn't have to be a text statement in the comic, just an example of Spider-Man using the power/ability/item. (Like a panel of him wall-crawling in his street clothes but carrying his shoes, for example.) The earlier the better (ie, ASM #22 is preferred over #522) even if he does the exact same thing in the two issues. And in-continuity Spider-Man titles are preferred over, say, Avengers or Contest of Champions or Megamorphs.

You can just straight replace the issue with the citation, generally, unless you feel the context is important. Here's a quick copy & paste format guide to save time:

(The Amazing Spider-Man #1)   looks like:   (The Amazing Spider-Man #1)
(Amazing Fantasy #15)
(The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 2 #1)
(The Amazing Spider-Man #500)
(Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #1)
(The Spectacular Spider-Man vol. 1 #134)
(The Spectacular Spider-Man vol. 2 #1)
(Web of Spider-Man #1)
(Spider-Man vol. 1 #1)
(Peter Parker: Spider-Man vol. 1 #75)
(Peter Parker: Spider-Man vol. 2 #1)
(The Sensational Spider-Man vol. 1 #1)
(Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1)
(The Sensational Spider-Man vol. 2 #23
(Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1)

As a last resort (go ahead and abbreviate it, it's a long title, the abbreviation is widely known, and it will probably be used many times):

(OHOTMU series/special name #1 YEAR)   e.g.: (OHOTMU Spider-Man 2004)

If you're not sure of the volume number, include the year of publication:

(The Sensational Spider-Man #1, 1996)

I hope that's clear and works well for everyone. I'll add as many as I can find as time goes on. -- HKMARKS 02:36, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Um, no offense, but whoever it was that put a [issue # needed] after the sentence, "He receives most of his powers when he is bitten by a radioactive common house spider", was either completely spacing out or needs to bone up on their Spidey. (lol) Replaced the [issue # needed] with (Amazing Fantasy #15). - Pennyforth 19:00, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Requested move

I suggest moving this page to Spider-Man's powers, abilities, and equipment to fix the capitalization mistake in the title. If anyone wants to suggest a more succinct title, that's welcome too. It will happen sometime in the next couple of days... I just don't want to have to move it twice. --HKMARKS 21:45, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Or Spider-Man's powers and equipment --HKMARKS 17:53, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

No arguments after 9+ days, so moved to Spider-Man's powers and equipment, & links checked -HKMARKS 14:50, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Healing factor

Removed a bit from the healing factor about not having a "regenerative healing factor" - as I understand it that means regrowing limbs or organs. While it may be true most of the time, it can't be tested (Spider-Man never gets his hands cut off) and the one time he did lose an organ, he regrew it. So, removed as speculation. Also, distinguished between skin and other kinds of scarring. It's been noted more than once that he shows evidence of past broken bones. -HKMarks 15:24, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

The whole thing about a healing factor is a bit difficult. "Healing factor" is just a generic term, I believe coined by Marvel but I'm not certain, that technically applies to all characters that are able to heal at levels that are beyond the natural capabilities of the human body. Since certain characters, like Wolverine and the Hulk for instance, are able to heal themselves at phenomenonally high levels, they're typically the measuring stick for Marvel characters, at least in the eyes of fans when it comes to discussions about accelerated healing. It's often confused because it's been written, even in a lot of these articles, that a character doesn't possess a "healing factor" unless they're able to heal themselves at a somewhat comparable level to these two characters. Spider-Man has healed from injuries that would have killed or permanently crippled an ordinary human. He does have a slight healing factor, he's able to heal just slightly better than what's possible for an ordinary human. Odin's Beard 00:46, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Anyone whose body is in good phsyical shape heals faster than someone in bad shape. Spider-man is just in really, really great shape. --Chris Griswold () 01:13, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
I dunno, I think it was during the Kraven's Last Hunt storyline, you know where Kraven defeats Spider-Man then masquerades as him for a while and then kills himself, that Kraven shoots Spider-Man with a shotgun, buries him alive, and leaves him for dead. I'm not completely sure about this, but I think Spider-Man crawled out of the ground two weeks later all healed up. Even if the shotgun didn't deal him what would be a lethal blow to an ordinary human, which I don't really see how it didn't, Spider-Man was still under the ground without food and water for two weeks. Sounds beyond human capabilities to me. Odin's Beard 23:38, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
He was actually shot with a "jungle potion" or somesuch (presumably with an effect similar to tetrodotoxin). Surviving without food and water was superhuman, but he didn't really have anything to heal from. --HKMarksTALKCONTRIBS 00:09, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Kraven expected him to stay alive. That's why he used the dart. His crawling from the grave had more to do with the properties of the dart used than with Spider-Man. --Chris Griswold () 06:37, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Movies

Would I be correct in saying the movies are non-canon? - (please respond on this page and my talk page) tinlv7

Yep, that's correct. More precisely, they're not in the comic book canon, but have their own separate movie canon. The novelizations aren't really in the movie canon either, actually; they're based on early revisions of the script, so they have their sort of separate movie-novel canon, that the movies aren't really "required" to follow. --HKMarksTALKCONTRIBS 01:06, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Stark Armor

I seem to recall in the '90's Spidey had a silver armor given to him by Stark, but I can't seem to find any mention of it on this page.66.109.248.114

[edit] Equipment

Latest gadget Peter has been using is a image inducer given to him by Beast of the X-Men, which he has been using to disguise himself as "Ben Reilly", a new teacher in his old workplace. Should that be added onto his list of equipment? Sera404 17:46, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Repeated strength level edits

I've been noticing people keep reverting the page back to showing Spidey's current strength level (around 20 tons?) and removing it due to supposed copyright infringements because we're not allowed to use marvel handbooks as sources apparently. Why not work on some compromise showing what Spidey can do easily with his strength (throwing cars, knocking people out with one finger) and when pushed to his limits and beyond (hoisting several train carriages to threaten a ninja, being a temporary support to hold up the Daily Bugle), etc? Sera404 10:37, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Spider-signal

I could swear I'd already added this, but um.. The spider-signal is an image of his MASK? I thought it was an image of the blocky red spider on his back.. the circle with the swastika-esque legs.

Yeah, it's of his red mask. Even when wearing his black uniform, it's still the red mask. Sera404 10:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Was it the spider-on-his-back in the 90s animated series, at least? I could swear it was. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.72.21.221 (talk) 03:58, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Spider Man Tech"

I'm sure somebody who works on this page saw th Spider Man Tech show on the History Channel last night. They had a panel of biologists and physicists that commented on what number of his powers were within the realm of possibility. I noticed this article mentions how he can climb up walls possibly because of tiny hairs. This is discussed at length on the show. They mentioned how semi-microscopic hairs on the spiders’ feet somehow interact with the atoms of the surface they are walking on and create a form of atomic static cling. This is why they can even walk up glass. They mentioned the scientific name for the process, but I forget it. Anyway, I think the show's info should be incorporated into this and Spiderman’s main article. (Ghostexorcist 21:36, 4 May 2007 (UTC))

I added just a small bit of the info presented on the show in the wallcrawling section. (Ghostexorcist 22:12, 4 May 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Web shooter

The webshooter is a stupid feature. Why didn't they just make it come out of his hand? --71.224.19.29 16:03, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

I presume back when Spider-Man was created, Stan Lee either didn't think about that at the time since theorically, Spidey would be squirting webs out of his behind, and that's just wrong. Peter Parker was designed to be an intelligent kid from the start, so what better way than to make his own tech-based synthetic webbing? Sera404 15:08, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
The webshooter is a great part of Spider-Man and I think this trend to remove the webshooter is a real shame. The webshooter gives him something technical to work on. If something goes wrong with his webshooters he can use his technical abilities to find a solution or improve them as needed. If something goes wrong with his hands then that's just weird. With webshooters he has cases of web fluid that he has to carry with him as ammo. He can stash spare web fluid or he can use the cases themselves as tools, such as dropping one into a machine to clog it up. They got rid of the webshooters in the movie just to simplify it (and they were right to want to simplify it) but in most cases simpler is not better. -- Lilwik 01:20, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image Inducer

Recent issue of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #20 has Peter making use of the image inducer Beast gave him again, yet foiled by Betty who saw through the disguise. Now that it's been around for a while and put into use, should it be added into Spider-Man's list of equipment? If nobody says anything, I'll have a go at doing it, but if someone else likes to try, feel free to add it in. Sera404 01:05, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Webbing

More information seems to have been added on spidermans webbing.

Powers

He can now create organic webs from his wrists, limited by his body's health and nutrition. Various glands within his arms can produce different types of webs - from drag lines, to sticky nets, to cocoons. Whereas his artifical webs typically decayed within 2 hours, his organic webs can be more persistent (depending on the thickness and type of web) such that web lines may last a week and web sacs may last for months or more.

The information above is taken from Marvel Universe. So could someone add it in Spidey's powers section? Here is the url for proof of authenticity.

http://www.marvel.com/universe/Spider-Man_(Peter_Parker)

[edit] Stark Armour

I think this is the best costume Spidey has had so far. It gave him so many abilities and it made him look good. I think he got rid of it because Tony could track him if he wore it (correct me if i'm wrong) but i'm sure he could of removed the tracking device and the red herring spider sense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.1.170.88 (talk) 20:16, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
