Spiritual science fiction
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spiritual Science Fiction is a category of science fiction that examines Mankind's spirituality or spiritual awakening brought forth by scientific and technological events, discoveries, and/or extraterrestrial encounters. It is important to note that spirituality does not necessarily mean religion or dogma, but an emotional connection to something greater than oneself, often existing within or a property of nature. Christian science fiction is a similar subgenre exploring Spiritual SF from a Christian point of view.
Spiritual Science Fiction uses all the standard plot devices of classic science fiction, such as alien contact, quantum exploration, biotechnology, etc., to suggest ways that humans might discover their connection to the natural world and the purpose for their existence.
Some major authors who have written in this genre are Robert A. Heinlein, Gene Wolfe, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Robert J. Sawyer, Ursula K. Le Guin and Octavia Butler.
